TULSA, Okla. - After a long deserving break, the Tulsa women's tennis team opens the 2020 spring schedule on Sunday in a doubleheader against Mercer at 8:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center on the TU campus.
A year ago, the Golden Hurricane produced a 15-10 overall record and appeared in the semifinals of the American Athletic Conference Championships.
Tulsa's doubles tandem Martina Okalova and Vera Ploner, both returning, became the second and third All-Americans in program history. They became the first Tulsa duo to earn a spot in the quarterfinal round of the NCAA Tournament.
The doubles team followed up last season's success at the Saint Francis Health System Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Women's All-American Championships. Ranked No. 5 in the ITA preseason rankings, the seniors went 2-1 vs. ranked competition and advanced to the consolation semifinals.
Okalova went 5-3 in singles play in the fall, ending at No. 52 in singles standings. In addition, the Slovakia native was named the American Athletic Conference Women's Tennis Player of the Month for September.
The Bears went 13-13 in 2019, ultimately seeing its season end in the quarterfinal round of the South Conference Championships.
