Golden Hurricane Go Undefeated in Doubleheader vs. Mercer

TULSA, Okla. -Â The Tulsa women's tennis team went undefeated in a doubleheader against Mercer on Sunday at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center. The Golden Hurricane (2-0) defeated the Bears in the morning slate 7-0 and then captured a 4-0 victory in the second match.
The Golden Hurricane are set to host the Hurricane Invite, beginning Saturday, January 18. Tulsa is scheduled to play LA Tech and Montana State on Saturday. The Hurricane will then wrap up their five-match homestand the next day vs. Wyoming.
Match 1: Tulsa 7, Mercer 0
The Tulsa women's tennis team swept Mercer, 7-0, for its first win of the 2020 season.
Laia Conde Monfort and Megan Hopton claimed the first win of the day at No. 2 doubles with a 6-2 win over Lauren Rich and Marie Mott.
The Golden Hurricane secured the doubles point following a win by No. 40 Martina Okalova and Vera Ploner in the No. 1 position. Â They defeated Maeva Roquebert and Mary Courville, 6-4.
Okalova, who ranks 52nd in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) rankings, was the first Hurricane on the board in singles play. She defeated Roquebert in straight sets 6-2, 6-2. Conde Monfort, Lian Benedejcic, and Marina Davtyan all followed suit, winning their matches in straight sets.
After losing their opening sets, Poppe and Ploner each rallied for three sets wins. At No. 3 singles, Ploner captured her win over Courville 4-6, 7-5, 6-1, while Poppe defeated Alara Hollyfield in the No. 2 position, 4-6, 6-4, 6-3.
Match 2: Tulsa 4, Mercer 0
The Tulsa women's tennis team continued its winning ways, but sweeping Mercer in the second match of the doubleheader 4-0. The Golden Hurricane won all four of their contests in straight sets.
Martina Okalova gave the Hurricane a 6-1, 6-4Â win at No. 1 singles vs. Alara Hollyfield. At the No. 2 position, Shura Poppe matched up with the Maeva Roquebert, the Bear's top player from the first contest. Poppe held her own with Roquebert, winning 6-3, 6-4.
Vera Ploner inched TU closer to its second win of the day, as she defeated Marie Mottet 6-2, 6-1, at No. 4 singles. Laia Conde Monfort clinched match point at No. 3 singles in a 6-3, 6-1 decision over Mary Courville.
