Morgan Brady led the attack for the second-straight game for Tulsa, but it wasn't enough as the Golden Hurricane dropped a 50-46 decision to Tulane on Wednesday night at the Donald W. Reynolds Center. The Golden Hurricane fell to 6-15 on the season and 1-7 in American Athletic Conference play, while the Green Wave moved to 12-9 overall and 7-1 in the league.
Brady had a season-best and team-leading 18 points for her second-straight double-digit scoring game, as well as her fourth of the season and 14th in her career. Kayla Moutry added seven points, while Kendrian Elliott had six points and a team-best six rebounds.
"We gave ourselves a chance as we cut our deficit from 14 to two in the fourth quarter," Head Coach Matilda Mossman said. "I am proud of our fight and our effort in the end. The people off the bench came in and played hard. Morgan Brady had a great game. She had to lead our team and she did a great job, but we have to have someone else score. We held a team to 50 points and we can't win because we can't make shots. We have to keep working and find someone to score."
The Golden Hurricane took 23 more shots than Tulane, but went 16-of-60 from the field, while the Green Wave was 14-of-37. The biggest discrepancy of made shots came at the free throw line with Tulane making 15-of-24 attempts to Tulsa's 9-of-15.
Tulsa had a 12-10 lead in steals and a 12-7 advantage in assists, while Tulane had a 38-36 edge in rebounds and a 7-2 advantage in blocks.
Tulsa shot just 20-percent in the first 20 minutes, while Tulane hit 52-percent of their attempts, but the Golden Hurricane shot 32-percent in the second half, while the Green Wave hit just 22-percent of their attempts.
After Tulsa jumped out to a 6-2 lead at the 6:06 mark of the first quarter, Tulane went on a 13-1 run for a 15-7 advantage with 2:10 on the clock. Brady hit a three-pointer with just 27 seconds to play, but the Green Wave owned a 15-10 lead at the end of the frame. The Hurricane forced seven Tulane turnovers in the first 10 minutes.
Tulsa cut their deficit to just one point 17-16 at the 5:25 mark of the second quarter, and then again with 2:40 on the clock (20-19), but the Green Wave scored the last six points of the period for a seven-point lead, 26-19, at halftime.
The Green Wave started the third quarter with a 9-2 run for a 14-point lead, 35-21, with 6:16 on the clock. Tulane also owned a 14-point lead at the 3:18 mark (37-23), again with 2:27 remaining in the frame (39-25), and at the end of the period (41-27).
Brady hit two free throws and a layup to pull Tulsa to within 10, 41-31, in the first 41 seconds of the fourth quarter, and then Moutry, Elin Hrafnkelsdottir and Destiny Johnson all scored a layup to cut Tulsa's deficit to four, 41-37, with 5:40 to play.
Mia Heide ended the Green Wave's scoring drought as she hit a free throw with 5:21 on the clock, and then Kayla Manuirirangi scored a three pointer to put Tulane up by eight, 45-37, with 2:04 remaining in the contest.
Brady hit a jumper with 40 seconds to play for a 45-39 score, but Tulane's Kaila Anderson scored two free throws followed by two Brady free throws for a 47-41 score with 25 seconds remaining. Elliott scored a layup with 18-seconds to play, and then Seirra Cheatham scored a free throw for Tulane, before Moutry scored a three-pointer to pull Tulsa to within two, 48-46, with five seconds left in the contest. Manuirirangi had a team-leading 18 points for the Green Wave, while Krystal Freeman added 10 and Cheatham posted seven points. Freeman recorded a team-high six rebounds, while Heide and Clark both had five boards.
