Tulsa Defeats Demons in the Reynolds Center

TULSA, Okla. –– Austin Richie had a season-high 19 points to lead Tulsa (2-3) to an 82-55 win over Northwestern State (1-6) Friday night at the Donald W. Reynolds Center.

Richie came in off the bench and sparked the Hurricane on a 17-2 run scoring 8 straight points himself. The transfer shot 50-percent (7-14) from the field and 50-percent from three (5-10) for Tulsa. He led the Hurricane in scoring in the first half scoring 14 of his 19 points.

Keyshawn Embery-Simpson added in 11 points on 4-9 (44-percent) shooting from the field. Rey Idowu was a beast in the paint scoring 10 points, while adding 8 rebounds and a block.

"It was a good performance by our guys in terms of how hard we played and competed. We shared the ball ending with 20 assists on 30 field goal makes; I loved seeing that. We rebounded the ball well; I loved seeing that," said head coach Frank Haith," We were able to build on what we were doing in the UT Arlington game, and it was good to get our guys back out there competing."
Tulsa and Northwestern State started the game trading blows as the Hurricane took an 8-7 lead on a Brandon Rachal three-pointer at the 16:17 mark. Idowu's back-to-back buckets gave Tulsa a 15-9 lead, which sparked the Hurricane on a 17-0 run capped off by an Elijah Joiner layup.

Rachal ended the game with 9 points, 8 rebounds, 3 assists and 2 steals for Tulsa, while Joiner put in 6 points, 5 steals and 5 assists.

In the second half, Tulsa opened the scoring with an Emmanuel Ugboh layup for a 43-20 lead. The Hurricane never looked back, not allowing the Demons closer than 19 points the remainder of the contest.

A fast-break layup by Embery-Simpson from Keshawn Williams gave the Hurricane its largest lead of the game at 69-41, 28 points, with 8:31 left in the contest.

The Demons were led by Carvell Teasett who scored 16 points off the bench. Tulsa held Northwestern State's leading scorers, Jairus Roberson and Trenton Massner, to a combined 6-22 (27%) from the field and 3-16 (19%) from three.

Freshman Christian Shumate capped off the night with an exclamation point, throwing down two massive dunks in the final minutes of the game. His first basket for the Hurricane came off an assist from high school teammate Keshawn Williams.
