GAME BOOK | SEASON STATS
Desiree Lewis tied her career-high of 16 points and Maya Mayberry set a personal-best with 15 points, but it wasn't enough as Tulsa dropped a 69-52 decision to Temple on Wednesday morning at McGonigle Hall in Philadelphia, Pa. The Golden Hurricane fell to 1-2 on the season and 0-2 in American Athletic Conference play, while the Owls moved to 2-3 overall and 2-0 in the league.
"I just felt like our kids fought on the defensive end until the fourth quarter, but offensively we just couldn't get anything going," Head Coach Matilda Mossman said. "I am happy for Des because she's worked really hard to extend her range, but our team shouldn't have to rely on her to lead us in scoring. Offensively we didn't shoot the ball very well and we left points at the free throw line."
Rebecca Lescay added 10 points and a team-best four steals, while Lewis and Wyvette Mayberry each pulled down five rebounds, and Elin Hrafnkelsdottir had the Hurricane's one block.
Tulsa forced Temple into 23 turnovers, while the Hurricane had just 12, and Tulsa had an 11-6 advantage in steals. Temple had a 41-29 lead in rebounds, a 20-12 advantage in assists and a 4-1 edge in blocks.
Tulsa shot just 37-percent compared to Temple's 54-percent in the first frame, but the Hurricane owned a 15-14 advantage thanks to five Hurricane steals and nine forced turnovers in the first 10 minutes.
Tulsa took a 32-30 lead into halftime, but shot an identical 37-percent in the second quarter and hit just 1-of-7 from three-point range for 14.3-percent.
Temple came out fired up in the second half, outscoring Tulsa 9-0 to take a 39-32 lead at the 7:30 mark. Two made three-pointers by Maya Mayberry and a layup by Lewis put Tulsa back on top, 40-39, with 4:35 to play in the third quarter.
There were nine tied scores and 13 lead changes, but Jasha Clinton scored on a jumper at the 4:10 mark of the third frame to put the Owls up 41-40, a lead they wouldn't relinquish for the remainder of the contest.
The Owls then went on an 7-0 run to climb to a 47-40 advantage with 1:18 remaining in the third frame, but a made jumper by Jessika Evans put Tulsa down by just five (47-42) at the end of the quarter.
