Tulsa Men's Tennis Splits Competition in Empire State

ITHACA, N.Y. - The Tulsa men's tennis team went 1-1 on Sunday in the Empire State, as the Golden Hurricane fell in a morning dual match against No. 16 Cornell, 4-2, before bouncing back with a 6-0 win over Binghamton. Both matches were played at the Reis Tennis Center on the campus of Cornell University.

The Golden Hurricane now stand at 7-4 overall. The Big Red improve to 7-1, while the Bearcats fall to 4-6.

The Golden Hurricane are set to hit the road this later this week, as they head to No. 21 Texas Tech (8-4) for a 4 p.m. dual match on Friday.

Match #1: No. 16 Cornell 4, Tulsa 2
Tulsa trailed No 16 Cornell in all three of its doubles matches early on, but the Golden Hurricane fought back and captured the lone point for an early 1-0 lead. Connor Di Marco and Kody Pearson won the final three games in the top spot over Alafia Ayeni and Eero Vasa, 6-4. The victory keeps the top tandem undefeated in doubles competition, as they improve to 5-0 overall and 4-0 at No. 1 doubles. In just their second dual match together, Ezequiel Santalla and Daniel Siddall erased a 2-1 deficit and clinched the doubles point over Evan Bynoe and Pietro Rimondini, 6-2.

Di Marco secured the first win in singles for the Golden Hurricane, giving TU a 2-1 lead. He took down  Bynoe in the No. 4 position in straight sets, 6-1, 6-2.

Tulsa battled to three sets in three matches. Jarod Hing fell in the No. 2 position to Ayeni, 6-1, 6-7, 6-3. Santalla dominated his opening set at No. 5 singles, but suffered a heartbreaking loss in a three-set tiebreaker to Pietro Rimondini, 1-6, 6-0, 7-6(5).

No. 56-ranked Kody Pearson went unfinished in the top spot against No. 110-ranked Eero Vasa, 6-4, 6-7, 3-3.

Match #2: Tulsa 6, Binghamton 0  
Tulsa would bounce back against Binghamton, as the Golden Hurricane blanked the Bearcats, 7-0. The two teams only played singles, where TU dominated all six courts in straight-set wins.

Stefan Hampe put the first point on the scoreboard for the Hurricane with a 6-2, 6-2 victory at No. 3 singles over Alejandro Pena. Kody Pearson increased the lead in the top position by way of a 6-1, 6-3 triumph over Michael Pawlowicz. In the No. 5 spot, Tom Thelwall-Jones secured his fourth straight singles win overall, as he took down Dan Pergel, 6-2, 6-1.

Jarod Hing secured the match for TU at No. 2 singles with a 7-5, 6-3 win against Kushaan Nath. Tulsa would go up 5-0 following Juan Pablo Cenoz's 6-4, 6-2 win in the No. 4 spot over Dylan Friedman. The final victory in singles came in the bottom position, as Daniel Siddall won his fourth straight singles match in a 6-4, 7-5 defeat of Sebastian Quiros. With the win, TU has now posted an 8-2 record at No. 6 singles this season.
