TULSA, Okla. - The Tulsa women's tennis team returns to action today at local rival Oral Roberts at 3 p.m. After taking on the Golden Eagles (5-7), the Golden Hurricane (8-4) will begin its 10-match homestand vs. Wichita State on Saturday at 1 p.m. at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center on the campus of TU.
The Wichita State match serves as Tulsa's first home match since February 9, when the Hurricane swept Abilene Christian, 7-0. Its last match was on February 25 in a 6-1 loss at then-No. 50-ranked Kansas.
Head coach Dean Orford has seen much progress out of his team over the first two months of competition. Freshman Laia Conde Monfort leads the team in total singles wins, boasting a 16-5 overall record. That includes a 7-2 mark in dual matches. In total, six Hurricane have double-digit wins in singles.
Tulsa's All-American doubles tandem of Martina Okalova and Vera Ploner are the No. 44-ranked tandem in the latest Oracle Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Division I Women's Doubles Rankings. They sit at 18-7 overall and 9-2 at No. 1 doubles. Okalova also stands at No. 118 overall in the latest singles rankings.
The Golden Eagles enter the week having won three of their last four matches. A week ago, they took down Southwestern (Kan.) at home, 7-0, before splitting competition at Northern Colorado (W, 4-2) and No. 34 Denver (L, 7-0).
The Shockers (7-10) went undefeated last week, going 3-0 on the road. On Wednesday, they played their first of two matches in the Queen City, as they took down Xavier, 5-2, followed by a 4-3 win over Cincinnati on Thursday. Wichita State would also pull out a 4-3 win at Louisville on Saturday.
