Tulsa Women Fall to Tulane 65-54

TULSA, Okla. –– 
Tulane outscored Tulsa by 18 points in the second half to grab a 65-54 victory Saturday afternoon at the Donald W. Reynolds Center. Tulsa fell to 3-5 overall on the season and 2-5 in American Athletic Conference play, while Tulane improved to 8-4 and 4-3.
 
Maya Mayberry led Tulsa with 21 points for her second 20+ scoring game of in the last three games, while the Green Wave tandem of Jerkaila Jordan and Krystal Freeman combined for 38 points to pace Tulane. Wyvette Mayberry added 10 points and Jessika Evans totaled nine points and grabbed a team-high eight rebounds for the Hurricane.
 
"Tulane is really good and there is a reason they are preseason No. 3 in our league.  Our league is really tough and we don't have a lot of experience of players playing together," said Tulsa Head Coach Matilda Mossman. "There is a lot of newness and people getting used to each other, but I'm encouraged with what we are doing."
 
"I am proud of our effort.  If we didn't have that bad third quarter we were right there with them. It is unfortunate for our kids to play that hard and do so many things right, but to not come up with the win," added Mossman.

For the game, Tulane shot 50 percent from the field, while Tulsa was just at 38 percent. The Green Wave had a 30-20 scoring advantage in the paint, while Tulsa scored 22 points off of Tulane's 16 turnovers. In the loss Tulsa still managed to knock down a season-high 10 3-pointers, bettering its previous season best of eight at Oklahoma State in the season opener.
 
Evans and the two Mayberry's each knocked down three of Tulsa's season-high 10 treys.
 
Trailing 34-27 at halftime, Tulane used a 24-7 third quarter to gain control of the game heading into the final 10 minutes. After Tulane took a 12-point lead, 53-41, at the 9:03 mark of the final period, the Hurricane whittled its deficit down to four points. Maddie Bittle's breakaway layup after a steal at the 6:26 mark made the score 55-51.
 
During Tulsa's 10-2 stretch to cut the deficit to four points, the Hurricane got two 3-pointers from the Mayberry sisters. That was as close as the Hurricane would get as Tulane went on a 10-3 run to close out the final 5:59 of the game.
 
After intermission, Tulane came out pressing the Hurricane and turned a 7-point halftime deficit into a 39-36 lead at the 7:11 mark, as the Green Wave outscored Tulsa 12-2 in the first three minutes of the second half.
 
The visitors outscored Tulsa by 17 points in the third quarter to take a 51-41 lead heading into the final 10 minutes. Tulane connected on 8-of-16 from the field, while Tulsa connected on just 3-of-12 in the third period.
 
Wyvette Mayberry scored the first points of the game on a 3-pointer at the 8:48 mark, and with her sister, Maya, combined to score 10 of Tulsa's 11 first quarter points. The Green Wave.
 
Evans scored Tulsa's first six points of the second quarter on two 3-pointers for a 6-0 run to put the Hurricane ahead 17-14 at the 8:32 mark. Tulane knotted the score at 17 at the 7:06 mark and the score was tied again at 20 and 22 before the Hurricane went on a 12-2 run to take a 10-point lead, 34-24, with 2:16 remaining in the 20 minutes.
 
Tulane ended the half scoring the final 3 points to make the halftime score 34-27.
 
At half, Maya Mayberry had a game-high 12 points, while Evans added nine points off the bench on 3-of-5 from 3-point range. Tulsa ended the first half shooting 46 percent from the field and 50 percent from 3-point range, while the Green Wave had percentages of .458 from the field and .444 percent behind the arc.
 
The Hurricane was hot in the second quarter, shooting 64% from the field on 9-of-14 and 63% on 5-of-8 from 3-point range.
 
Tulsa will be back in action Wednesday as the Golden Hurricane hosts the East Carolina Pirates with a 6 p.m. tipoff. Tulsa will then be on the road for a two-game road trip, facing the Memphis Tigers on Jan. 23, and ECU a week later on Jan. 30.
