
Former Tulsa Tennis Star Marcelo Arvelo Advances to Australian Open Doubles Quarterfinals

MELBOURNE, Australia –– Former Tulsa Golden Hurricane tennis star Marcelo Arvelo (2009-11) and his doubles partner Matwe Middelkoop advanced to the quarterfinals of the Australian Open.
Arvelo, ranked 52nd in the World for doubles, and Middelkoop won three matches to make it to the quarterfinal round where the duo fell 6-3, 6-4 on Wednesday to Jamie Murray and Bruno Soares.
In the first and third rounds, Arvelo/Middelkoop fell behind one set by identical 7-6 scores. In the opening round, the tandem defeated Marcelo Demoliner and Santiago Gonzalez 7-6, 6-3 after falling behind after losing the first set.
Arvelo/Middelkoop defeated Miomir Kecmanovic and Casper Rudd in straight sets 6-3 and 6-1 in the second round and then after dropping the first set of the third round (7-6) against Alexander Bublik and Andrey Golubev came back and claimed 7-6, 6-3 wins to close out the match and advance to the quarterfinals.
Before turning professional, Arvelo played two seasons at Tulsa where he compiled an overall 33-16 record. He was named the Conference USA Player of the Year and the ITA Region Player to Watch as a sophomore in the 2010-11 campaign. Arevalo was also the C-USA Freshman of the Year and earned first team all-conference honors during his collegiate career.
