Tulsa, Okla. ― The Tulsa volleyball team is set to begin their 2021 campaign with a trio of games at the Husker Invitational in Lincoln, Nebraska. The Golden Hurricane open with two games on Friday, August 27th, squaring off with 5th ranked Nebraska at 11:00 a.m. and K-State at 4:00 p.m. before taking on Colgate Saturday, August 28th at noon.
Playing in a shortened spring season due to the Covid-19 pandemic last year, Tulsa had a 2-8 record, with all matches against American Athletic Conference opponents. The Hurricane returns all seven starters, and 11 letterwinners overall while welcoming three newcomers to a heavily experienced roster.
The middle blocking duo of Maggie Hembree and Callie Cook return as graduate students. Last season, Hembree was named to the American Athletic Conference all-conference second team, while Cook set the school record for most total blocks in a career with 408.
Head coach Ryan Wills is in his 8th year at the helm of the volleyball program. The University of Tulsa graduate has compiled a 110-92 record overall.
Nebraska enters the 2021 season ranked 5th in the American Volleyball Coaches Association Poll. The Huskers posted a 16-3 overall record and a 14-2 conference record last spring, and advanced to the NCAA Quarterfinals last season.
Nebraska won the only previous meeting against Tulsa, a 3-0 final in 2015.
K-State finished the shortened spring season 13-8 overall, and 10-6 in Big 12 play. The Wildcats are led by reigning Big 12 Freshman of the year Aliyah Carter, who was in the top-15 in the country with 325 kills last season.
K-State leads the all-time series 22-1, including a 3-1 decision in 2013.
Colgate finished runner-up in the Patriot League in the spring, dropping the conference championship game to Army. Back-to-back Patriot League Player of the Year Alli Lowe paces the Raiders, tallying 1,356 kills in her career.
This will be the third meeting between Tulsa and Colgate, with the series being tied 1-1.
