Conway, S.C. –– After handling Loyola Chicago in the first round of the Myrtle Beach Invitational, The University of Tulsa men's basketball team will face Charlotte in the semifinals on Friday evening.
Tipoff is set for 6 p.m. (CT) and will once again air on ESPNU with Charlie Kempf bringing fans the action and King McLure providing the color commentary. Bob Stevens and JR Rollo will broadcast the radio call on Big Country 99.5 FM. Because of Tulsa's home football game, there will be no postgame at the conclusion of Friday's matchup. Instead, the station will switch over to Bruce Howard and Rick Couri as Tulsa football hosts South Florida.
The Golden Hurricane and 49ers will meet for just the fifth time, with Tulsa holding a 3-1 advantage in the series. This is the last time the teams won't meet regularly as the Niners join the American Athletic Conference starting next season. Charlotte won the last matchup 90-86 in overtime on Jan. 16, 2014.
Coach Eric Konkol is no stranger to Charlotte, having faced them numerous times in his time at Louisiana Tech. He is 6-1 in games against the Niners as a head coach, and 3-1 against current Charlotte head coach Ron Sanchez.
Tulsa (2-1) enters the matchup having defeated Loyola Chicago in dominating fashion, 85-66. It was the largest in-season tournament win since a 74-51 win against Stephen F. Austin in the 2016 Diamond Head Classic. Thursday's win was also the largest during an in-season tournament against a team who is coming off an NCAA Tournament appearance since beating No. 11 Tennessee 88-68 in the 1999 Puerto Rico Holiday Classic Championship.
Charlotte comes in with a 3-0 record having beaten Boise State 54-42 in its tournament opener. The Niners defense suffocated the Broncos, allowing only 11 points in the opening half and holding Boise State to 32-percent shooting on the evening. Through three games, Charlotte is only allowing 49.3 points.
Following Friday night's game, the Hurricane will play again on Sunday, either in the Championship game at noon (CT), or the third-place game at 9:30 a.m. Tulsa will face either UMass or Murray State, who face-off at 1:30 on Friday.
