Conway, S.C. –– The University of Tulsa men's basketball team will wrap up its participation in the Myrtle Beach Invitational with the third-place game against Murray State on Sunday morning.
It's an early tip as the game gets underway at 9:30 a.m. (CT) on ESPNU. Rich Hollenberg and Dane Bradshaw will bring the action on television. Bruce Howard is back on the air as he and JR Rollo will broadcast the radio call on Big Country 99.5 FM.
Murray State holds a 2-1 lead in the all-time series and won the lone neutral site matchup in 1988. The two teams haven't met since 2014, when Murray State ended Tulsa's season 83-62 in an NIT game in the Reynolds Center.
Tulsa is 2-2 heading into Sunday's matchup after falling against Charlotte on Friday night. The Hurricane battled back from a 13-point deficit, but ultimately the Niners came away with the 68-65 win and advanced to the final. Sam Griffin had a look to tie at the buzzer, but a good defensive play from Charlotte altered the shot. Griffin finished with 19 points in the second half, 21 for the game. Tim Dalger and Anthony Pritchard each added 13.
Griffin has had a fantastic tournament. The junior guard has averaged 20.5 points on 15-31 (48.4 percent) shooting, including nine triples. His play in the second half of games has been particularly exciting, as he's scored 36 of his 41 points in the second 20 minutes.
Murray State was seconds away from moving on to the final but lost to UMass 71-69 on a heartbreaking 3-pointer in the corner as time expired. JaCobi Wood had a fantastic game, scoring 24, recording five rebounds and dishing out four assists. He's the second leading scorer on the Racers this season. Jamari Smith leads the team, averaging 16.7 points, and he scored 14 in Friday night's loss.
After the Hurricane wraps up the Myrtle Beach Invitational, Tulsa will not play again until Black Friday when TU travels to Stillwater to face Oklahoma State in historic Gallagher-Iba Arena. Tipoff for the is set for 7 p.m. on ESPN+.
