Wyvette Mayberry's 21 points wasn't enough for the Golden Hurricane Saturday afternoon as Temple took home a 73-58 victory on Tulsa's Legends Day at the Donald W. Reynolds Center.
 
Tulsa fell to 14-6 overall and 4-5 in the American Athletic Conference, while Temple improved to 12-10 and 7-4 in league play.
 
Despite 23 turnovers, it was Temple's defense, holding Tulsa to 32-percent from the field, and its 43-25 rebounding advantage that gave the Owls the edge on the afternoon. Temple converted 52-percent of its field goals and was 36-percent from three-point range.
 
For Tulsa, Mayberry connected on 6-of-11 from the field for 54-percent, while the rest of the Hurricane team shot only 28-percent from the field. Freshman Delanie Crawford added nine points. Tulsa managed to score only 19 points off 23 Temple turnovers as the Owls outscored the Hurricane in each quarter.
 
Mia Davis led Temple with 21 points and Alexa Williamson added 14 points. Freshman Aniya Gourdine had her second straight triple-double with 11 points, 15 rebounds and 10 assists.
 
The game was tied only once as Temple led for a total of 37:49 in the game. The Owls led by double-figures for all but 0:04 of the second half.
 
Tulsa scored the first point of the second half to cut a seven-point halftime deficit to 36-29. Temple took a double-digit lead, 41-29, at the 7:47. The Owls took its largest lead of the quarter at 16 points on a Williamson jumper to make the score 50-34.
 
The Hurricane cut its deficit to single digits on an 8-0 run to make the score 52-44 with one minute to play in the third quarter. Temple answered with six straight points to push its lead back to 14 points at 58-44 to close out the period.
 
Temple increased its lead to a game-high 20 points with just under three minutes left to play at 72-52.
 
It took over four minutes for Tulsa to get on the scoreboard to start the game as Poindexter's layup at the 5:41 mark tied the score at two. The Owls retook the lead at 4-2 and wouldn't relinquish the lead the rest of the first half.
 
Temple had its largest first quarter lead of nine points when Mia Davis' two free throws made the score 13-4. Tulsa scored five points to close out the period trailing 15-9 for the second-fewest points in the first quarter this season for the Hurricane.
 
The Owls continued to lead throughout the second period. Tulsa got as close as two points at 20-18 on a Mayberry three-pointer, but Temple went on an 8-0 run for a 10-point advantage at 28-18 with 3:26 left on the first-half clock. Tulsa trimmed that lead to five points at 31-26 before the Owls ended the first half with a 36-28 lead.
 
At intermission, Mayberry kept the Hurricane in the game with a game-high 13 points on 4-of-5 from the field, 3-of-3 from three-point range and 2-of-2 from the line, while the rest of the Tulsa lineup shot just 27-percent from the field. Tulsa shot just 22-percent from the field in the first quarter but improved to 53.8-perent in the second period. Temple ended the first 20 minutes with a .500 field goal percentage.
 
It was Temple's 9-of-11 from the free throw line compared to Tulsa's 2-of-2 that was the difference in the first half. Tulsa scored 13 points off 13 Temple turnovers and had a 12-to-5 edge for points in the paint.
 
Tulsa will be back at the Reynolds Center Wednesday and Saturday. The Hurricane hosts Tulane in a 6:30 p.m. midweek game and squares off against SMU on Saturday with a 1 p.m. tip-off.
