TULSA, Okla. ––
SMU hit on all cylinders as the Mustangs captured a dominating 75-42 victory over Tulsa Saturday afternoon at the Donald W. Reynolds Center in the first game between the two conference foes in over two years.

SMU improved to 12-10 and 6-4 in the American Athletic Conference, while Tulsa dropped its third straight and fell to 14-8 overall and 4-7 in league play.

Tulsa started the game scoring the first eight points but the Mustangs ran out to a 20-point halftime lead and led by as many as 42 points in the second half. The win is SMU's first in Tulsa since the 2010-11 season.

SMU had five players in double-figure points as Jasmine Smith led the way with 18 points. Sydne Wiggins and JaQuia White each added 13, Keyanna Warthen 12 and Regan Bradley had 10 points. Warthen added 11 rebounds for her second double-double of the season.

Tulsa had two players in double-figures as freshman Temira Poindexter led Tulsa with her second double-double, tallying 10 points and 10 rebounds, and was joined by Maya Mayberry's 10 points.

The Mustangs shot 47-percent from the field and 40-percent from behind the arc. Tulsa had another off-shooting night converting on just 22-percent from the field, 27-percent from three-point range and just 57-percent from the line. The Hurricane didn't score more than 13 points in any of the four quarters.

Covid protocols prevented the two schools from facing each other the last two seasons as SMU suspended its season a year ago.  The previous meeting came at the Reynolds Center on Feb. 15, 2000.

Tulsa jumped out to an 8-0 lead on two three-pointers and two free throws while holding SMU scoreless for the first 3:49. The Mustangs scored the next five points before Rebecca Lescay's layup ended a 2:42 scoring drought for the Hurricane.

After Tulsa scored the first eight points of the game, the Mustangs outscored the Hurricane 37-9 the remainder of the first half.

SMU took its first lead at 11-10 with 2:44 remaining in the first quarter and had a 14-12 lead after one quarter and never relinquished that lead the rest of the way. Tulsa shot only 30-percent from the field, while SMU knocked down 46-percent of its field goals in the first period.

The second quarter was all SMU as the Mustangs took a 37-17 halftime lead. SMU outscored Tulsa 23-5 in the second 10 minutes while connecting on 60-percent of its field goals and had a 12-0 edge for points in the paint and 10-0 for points off turnovers.

Tulsa's five points was the fewest for any period this season as the Hurricane made just 1-of-12 field goals and was out-rebounded 13-6.  The Hurricane didn't score a field goal in the final 9:31 of the first half as Tulsa's only field goal came at that point on a Delanie Crawford three-pointer to bring the Hurricane to within one point at 16-15.

Crawford added a free throw to make the score 24-16, but SMU scored the next 13 points while Tulsa suffered through a 6:17 scoring drought until hitting another free throw for its 17th point with 0:12 left before intermission.

The Hurricane went 0-for-11 from the field for the final 9:31 of the first half.

SMU added to its halftime lead in the third period, outscoring the Hurricane 25-11 in the quarter for a 62-28 lead after three quarters. The two teams each scored 13 fourth quarter points as the Mustangs claimed the 33-point win.

Tulsa will take to the road for a Thursday night game at East Carolina before returning to the Reynolds Center next Sunday for the regular season home finale against the Wichita State Shockers for a 1 p.m. game.
