MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Kylie Norwood blasted a three-run home run in the fifth inning, her first of the season, which proved to be the winning runs in Tulsa's 6-5 win against Memphis on Thursday afternoon.
The homer put Tulsa up 6-1, but the Golden Hurricane would have to hold off a late Memphis charge as the Tigers put four across in the bottom of the seventh before Kylee Nash came in to close the game and earn TU's first save of the season.
Tulsa improved to 13-23-1 and 2-4-1 in the American Athletic Conference, while Memphis fell to 15-27 and 1-9 in conference play. The win also snapped seven straight games without a win, six losses and one tie.
The Hurricane narrowly outhit Memphis 10-9 with five of the Tigers' hits coming in the final frame. The Tigers were guilty of two errors to Tulsa's none, and TU left seven runners on the basepaths while Memphis stranded three.
Samantha Pochop (8-11) went six and a third in the circle with nine strikeouts and nine hits, earning the win. She was also responsible for all five runs. The senior was brilliant for the first six innings, allowing only four hits and a solo home run while striking out nine Tigers.
Defensively, Tulsa made a couple of standout plays near the end of the game to preserve the lead. In the sixth, Kailyn Bearpaw put an end to Memphis' inning by making grab in right field and then a perfect throw to second to nab a runner attempting to tag up and advance from first.
An inning later, Imani Edwards made what turned out to be a game-saving grab at short. After cutting the lead to 6-3 on three consecutive hits, and with a runner on first, Memphis hit a ground ball up the middle that seemed destined for a fourth-straight hit, but Edwards somehow reached it with a diving snag, and then while lying on her stomach, she beat the runner to the bag for the first out.
The next Tiger batter homered to left and instead of tying the game, only cut the lead to one. Nash then entered the circle and got two of the next three batters to ground out, ending the game and recording her first save.
Tulsa took an early lead when Abby Jones drove a 3-1 pitch to center for a two-out triple. Bearpaw singled up the middle to bring Jones in for the first run. Memphis would tie the game at one in the bottom of the second with a leadoff home run to left.
Neither team would score until Tulsa regained the lead in the fifth. Norwood singled up the middle and then advanced to third when Haley Morgan's bunt attempt resulted in a throwing error. Jones drove in Norwood with a sacrifice fly to center, putting Tulsa up 2-1.
The Hurricane stretched its lead out in the fifth inning after Edwards singled and MaKayla Jackson was hit by a pitch. Kennedy Cramer reached safely thanks to a throwing error, bringing in one run and putting two on. Norwood came to the plate and after taking the first pitch, she launched a no-doubter off the flagpole in center, putting the Hurricane up 6-1.
The two teams will meet again Friday afternoon for a doubleheader to wrap up the weekend. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. on ESPN+
