TULSA, Okla. ― Coming off three straight-wins, including a victory over No. 17 Middle Tennessee State, the 49th ranked Tulsa men's tennis team fell short Monday night, falling 4-1 to No. 27 SMU in the regular season finale at Michael D. Case Tennis Center. Tulsa enters the American Athletic Conference Championship 14-10 overall.
Down a set, Adham Gaber was battling in the second, behind 4-5 and locked at 40-40 with a chance to extend the match. SMU's Kumar just edged out Gaber at the end, dropping a hard-fought battle at No. 4 singles that gave the Mustangs their 7th road win of the year. At the time of the clinch, both Callum Gale and Ezequiel Santalla were within a couple of points of singles victories.
The pairing of Kody Pearson/Connor Di Marco continued their impressive play, extending their win streak to six in a row while knocking off their fourth ranked opponent this season. The duo sits at No. 73 in the ITA doubles rankings.
Pearson, who is ranked No. 87 in the ITA singles rankings, continued his dominant junior campaign, winning in straight sets at No. 1 singles, 7-6, 6-3. The Sydney, Australia product is a team-best 14-4 in singles play this spring, and 9-3 in doubles.
Prior to the match, Tulsa honored senior Tom Thelwall-Jones. Thelwall-Jones has 57 career wins in his four years at Tulsa and has clinched five doubles points this spring.
TU will shift its focus to the American Athletic Conference Championship, taking place at the Case Tennis Center, from Friday, April 22-Sunday, April 24. Admission is free, and Tulsa's draw will be announced later in the week.
