The University of Tulsa Head Coach Angie Nelp named John McCullough as the director of player development for the women's basketball program.
"I am thrilled to announce the addition of John to our staff as the director of player development," Nelp said. "The value he brings with his experience cannot be overstated. His successful tenure as a women's basketball coach here in the state of Oklahoma, coupled with his time in the NBA, will enhance every aspect of our program."
McCullough comes to TU after spending the last 10 years (2012-21) as an assistant coach and advanced scout for the NBA's Portland Trail Blazers. He assisted with practice, game planning and player development, and helped integrate analytics data.
"I'm very excited to be a part of Coach Nelp's staff and the opportunity to work at The University of Tulsa," McCullough said.
Prior to the Trail Blazers, McCullough served as an NBA officials observer for seven years (2006-12). Previously, McCullough was the women's basketball head coach at Oklahoma Baptist University for 12 seasons (2000-12), where he was the all-time wins leader and the NAIA District Women's Coach of the Year. He also had stints as the men's basketball head coach at New Mexico Highlands University (1996-2000), and as a men's basketball assistant coach at both New Mexico (1988-95) and SMU (1985-88).
McCullough played for the University of Oklahoma for three seasons (1976-79) and was tabbed as an NCAA and NABC All-American, as well as was the 1979 Big 8 Player of the Year. He went on to play for the NBA Phoenix Suns for four years (1980-83) and then played in Europe for three years (1983-85).
McCullough earned his bachelor's degree in petroleum land management from Oklahoma in 1981 and his master's degree in sports administration from New Mexico in 1990.
