TULSA, Okla. — True freshman Amy Leather of The University of Tulsa women's tennis team took down Raquel Gonzalez—ranked No. 121 in the country—during the Golden Hurricane's 6-1 loss to No. 13 Oklahoma State (1-0) Saturday in the Michael D. Case Tennis Center.
The first loss of the year puts the Hurricane at 3-1 overall.
Leather, from Bath, England, earns her first career win against a nationally ranked player at the No. 6 position. In the first set, Leather took the first game point and did not look back, winning 6-4 in a stanza that only had one tie score at 1-1. Her lead never extended past two points during the set win.
In the second set, Leather found herself in an initial 3-0 deficit. Gonzalez maintained a three-point lead at 4-1 and 5-2 before Leather rattled off three points in a row to tie it at five all. Gonzalez took the advantage at 6-5 before Leather captured another point, forcing a tiebreaker set at 6-6.
Leather won the tiebreaker by a score of 7-5, making it her second tiebreaker win of the year and first of the dual-match season. She is now undefeated in her last five singles matches, all of which were won in straight sets.
