
Tulane Outshoots Golden Hurricane

NEW ORLEANS, La. –– The University of Tulsa couldn't keep up with Tulane's firepower in a 93-77 loss in front of 973 fans in Avron B. Fogelman Arena in Devlin Fieldhouse on Wednesday evening.
The Golden Hurricane falls to 4-10, 0-3 in The American, while Tulane improves to 9-5 and 2-1 in conference play.
Both teams shot the ball well from the floor, with the Green Wave shooting 55 percent to Tulsa's 50. Tulane also had the edge from the 3-point line, knocking down 12 3-pointers at a 46 percent clip, while Tulsa hit 10 and shot 33 percent from deep. The two teams moved the ball around with both recording 23 assists.
Tulsa outrebounded Tulane 34-28, but turned it over seven more times, which led to 18 points. The Green Wave were efficient on the break, recording 25 fast break points while holding Tulsa to 12. The Hurricane also struggled to get to the free throw line, and when it did, TU didn't convert, finishing 3-of-7 while Tulane hit 17-of-20 from the charity stripe.
It was another big night for Bryant Selebangue. The big man scored 22 points and had 13 rebounds, both career highs. It was the fifth double-double of the young sophomore's Tulsa career. Sam Griffin, Keyshawn Embery-Simpson and Brandon Betson joined Selebangue in double figure scoring, recording 15, 15 and 12, respectively.
Griffin added five assists, which was only surpassed by Anthony Pritchard's seven. Pritchard also had a pair of steals. Betson scored his 12 off four 3-pointers.
For the Green Wave, Jalen Cook and Jaylen Forbes led the way with 24 and 20 points. In addition to his scoring, Cook distributed the ball well, picking up seven assists.
Tulsa had the Tulane lead down to six early in the second half, 51-45, after a Griffin 3-pointer. However, Tulane responded with a 14-4 run over the next 5:22, and suddenly the lead was 64-49 with a little under 12 remaining.
The Hurricane wasn't done fighting, as TU managed to get the lead under 10 three more times. But Tulane had an answer for each of Tulsa's attempts, hitting six second half threes.
Selebangue's dunk off Griffin's assist at the 7:30 mark brought the lead back under 10, 75-66. A quick five points from Tulane and the deficit was back to 14 almost immediately. From there Tulane was able to push the lead to a game-high 18 with 50 seconds remaining before Selebangue finished the game with a putback dunk.
Tulsa opened the contest with a layup from Sterling Gaston-Chapman, and quickly pushed the lead to four. It wasn't long before Tulane started heating up, knocking down back-to-back 3-pointers to take the lead.
After Selebangue's turnaround jumper gave Tulsa a 9-8 lead, Tulane went on a 14-0 run that started with an old fashioned 3-point play at the first media timeout. A Tim Dalger free throw at 12:21 ended the run with the Green Wave leading 22-9. After a Tulane bucket, Keyshawn Embery-Simpson knocked down a corner triple to snap what had been a five-minute stretch with no field goals for the Hurricane.
The two teams traded mini runs with the Tulane lead hovering between 8 and 12 for the next few minutes before Tulsa made a final first half push. The Green Wave extended its lead to 11, 42-31 with 3:53 to play. Selebangue responded with back-to-back buckets of his own, followed by a step-back 3-pointer from Betson to cut the lead to four. Tulane ended the half with a pair of free throws and a dunk to go to the locker room up 46-38.
The two offenses were in synch in the first half, with Tulane hitting 50 percent of its shots to Tulsa's 48.5 percent. The Green Wave connected on six triples, while Tulsa hit five, and the teams shot 38 and 36 percent respectively on deep balls.
Selebangue paced Tulsa with 12 points and seven rebounds in the opening half, while Jalen Cook scored 12 for the Green Wave. Anthony Pritchard assisted on four buckets for the Hurricane.
Tulsa returns to the friendly confines of the Donald W. Reynolds Center to host Temple on Tuesday. Tipoff for the matchup with the Owls is set for 7 p.m. and the game will air on ESPN+.
