TULSA, Okla. –– The University of Tulsa men's basketball team will host South Carolina State in the Donald W. Reynolds Center on Monday evening to close a four-game homestand to open the 2023-24 season.
Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. and the game will air on ESPN+. Chad McKee and Pooh Williamson will bring fans the action. Tulsa fans can also catch the game on Big Country 99.5 FM or the Varsity Network app. Bruce Howard and JR Rollo have the call tomorrow.
Monday's game is the second and final game of Tulsa's participation in the 2023 Golden Turkey Slam, presented by Russ Potts Productions. The Missouri Tigers host Jackson State Sunday evening and South Carolina State on Wednesday in the final two games of the event.
The Golden Hurricane and the Bulldogs meet for just the third time this Monday. Tulsa won the other two matchups, that both happened in consecutive seasons from 2018-19 to 2019-20. The Hurricane came out on top 78-47 in the last meeting on Nov. 27, 2019, using a 21-5 lead out of the halftime break to take control of the game. Four Hurricane finished in double figures for scoring, led by 18 from Reggie Jones.
The Hurricane took care of Jackson State 72-52 in the opener of the Golden Turkey Slam on Thursday to move to 3-0 on the early season. PJ Haggerty scored 20 to lead Tulsa, while Isaiah Barnes and Cobe Williams added 11 and 10 apiece. All three of the guards have scored in double figures in each of the first three games.
Cobe is averaging 16.7 points per contest to lead all of Tulsa's scorers. Haggerty puts up 15.7 per game, while Barnes scores 13.0 a night. Forward Jared Garcia has been the top rebounder, pulling down 7.7 boards per game. Barnes and Haggerty are both near the top of this category as well, grabbing 7.0 and 6.0 rebounds, respectively.
The Bulldogs are 2-2 heading into Monday's contest, winning a pair of games at home and losing their two road games, including an 89-72 decision at Samford on Friday evening. Second year head coach Erik Martin is looking to improve on a 5-26 record from a season ago.
Omar Croskey and Mitchel Taylor lead the Bulldogs in scoring this season, averaging 13.0 and 12.0 points. Davion Everett's nine rebounds per game tops the team. The Bulldogs struggle from 3-point range, connecting on just 22.9 of their deep balls this season (16-70). Croskey is the team's leader with six made threes.
Following Monday's game, Tulsa will celebrate Thanksgiving before its first road game of the season. The Hurricane travel to Little Rock, Ark. to take on the Trojans on Saturday. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m. and will air on ESPN+.
