Hurricane Splits Day Two to Close Out Blue Gray Classic

MONTGOMERY, Ala. — The University of Tulsa women's tennis team suffered a 4-2 setback against Alabama (7-3) before earning a dominant 4-1 win over Furman (4-9) Saturday to wrap up the 75th Annual Blue Gray National Tennis Classic in Montgomery, Ala. 
 
The Golden Hurricane's record moves to 8-5 after a long weekend of competition.
 
Tulsa, down 1-0 after concluding doubles play with the Crimson Tide Friday night, began the day with the singles portion of the Alabama match. Maria Berlanga Bandera struck first for the Hurricane, notching a 6-3, 6-4 decision at the No. 2 position. Alabama would answer back with a win at Singles No. 5 before Myroslava Zelenchuk responded with a strong two-set victory (6-1, 6-3) at the No. 4 spot to tie the dual match at 2-2.
 
The Crimson Tide would go on to score at the No. 3 and No. 1 spots to seal the win away the 4-2 win over Tulsa.
 
In the evening, TU met with the Furman Paladins for the first time. The Hurricane cruised to the doubles point thanks to victories by Berlanga and Lily Hutchings at the No. 1 position and Zelenchuk and Amy Leather at the No. 3 position. Berlanga and Hutchings win over No. 51 Jess Dawson and Sara Snyder mark the first ranked victory for the sophomore duo.
 
In singles play, Tulsa scored at the No. 1, 2 and 6 positions in straight sets. Clinching the dual match victory at 4-1 was senior Laia Conde Monfort, who took down the Paladins' Ellie Schulson 7-6 (7-5), 6-4.
 
Tulsa returns home Saturday, Mar. 4, to take on the Abilene Christian Wildcats (6-6). Starting time is to be determined.
