ORLANDO, Fla. — A determined University of Tulsa women's tennis squad opened quarterfinal action Thursday with a 4-0 sweep over fifth-seeded Wichita State (12-10) to advance to the semifinal round of The American Women's Tennis Championships. TU will make its 18th-straight conference semifinal appearance under Head Women's Coach Dean Orford tomorrow against No. 1 seed SMU (14-8) at 2 p.m. CT.

The 73rd-ranked Golden Hurricane improved to 14-10 on the year and 5-1 against conference opponents. Tulsa now leads the overall series against Wichita State 23-22.

The doubles point came down to the No. 2 position after Maria Berlanga Bandera and Lily Hutchings scored a 6-1 victory in the first position and Myroslava Zelenchuk and Amy Leather dropped the third position 6-1. Laia Conde Monfort and Ana Naranjo Martinez prevailed 6-4 over the Shockers' Lingwei Kong and Natsumi Kurahashi to secure the initial score for the Hurricane.

Monfort quickly picked up Tulsa's second team point in singles play, dropping only one game point on the way to a 6-1, 6-0 finish for her third straight win at the top of the lineup.

Naranjo extended the Hurricane's lead to 3-0 when she overcame Wichita State's Theodora Chantava 6-4, 6-1 in the fifth position, earning her 10th overall win of the year and improving to 8-2 in dual match play.

Clinching and ending the match at 4-0 was sophomore Myroslava Zelenchuk, who erased a 1-4 deficit in her first set and rode the momentum from there to capture a 7-5, 6-1 win at the No. 4 position. The second, third and sixth positions were left unfinished.

TU will be back in action tomorrow to take on one-seeded and 35th-ranked SMU Mustangs at 2 p.m. CT on the USTA National Campus courts.
