TULSA, Okla. — The University of Tulsa women's tennis team won the doubles point but could not keep the momentum in singles play, falling 4-2 to the No. 51 Denver Pioneers (14-4) Friday at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center.
The loss drops the 68th-ranked Golden Hurricane to 11-9 on the season.
Tulsa handily won the doubles point thanks to a 6-0 sweep by Laia Conde Monfort and Ana Naranjo Martinez in the second position followed by a 6-4 win by Amy Leather and Myroslava Zelenchuk in the No. 3 spot. Leather and Zelenchuk erased a 2-4 deficit to clinch the doubles point for TU, leaving the No. 1 position unfinished.
In singles play, Denver responded with straight-set victories at the No. 5 and 6 positions to go up 2-1 on Tulsa.
Sophomore Maria Berlanga Bandera tied it up at 2-2 when she took down the Pioneers' Andrea Burguete Beltran in two sets. Berlanga won the first set 6-2 and forced a tiebreaker set at 6-6 in the second set. In the tiebreaker, Burguete reached four referee overrules, awarding Berlanga a game point to give her the 7-6 set win and the head-to-head match victory.
The Pioneers would win the fourth and first positions to seal away the 4-2 decision over Tulsa, leaving position No. 3 unfinished.
Tulsa will take on Cincinnati (7-12) tomorrow at 2:30 p.m. for Senior Day. Free smoothies will be given to the first 100 students attending tomorrow's match.
