Golden Hurricane back home Wednesday night against UTSA
TULSA, Okla. –– Tulane pulled out a 94-87 overtime win over Golden Hurricane inside the Donald W. Reynolds Center Sunday afternoon on a snowy and single-digit temperature day in Tulsa.
PJ Haggerty led four Tulsa players in double-figures with 25 points, followed by 17 from Cobe Williams 13, from Matt Reed and 11 from Isaiah Barnes. In addition to his career-high 13 points the freshman Reed also grabbed 16 rebounds, the second-most for a Tulsa player in Reynolds Center history.
The Reynolds Center single-game rebounding record for a Tulsa player is 17 by Michael Ruffin on Feb. 13, 1999, against Air Force.
Tulane's veteran team was led by Kevin Cross' 28 points and nine rebounds, while fellow senior Jaylen Forbes added 20 points.
Tulsa fell to 9-7 on the year and 0-4 in AAC play, while the Green Wave improved to 11-5 and 2-2 in league action
"I thought our guys played really good basketball going into halftime," said Tulsa Head Coach Eric Konkol. "Down the stretch we had opportunities. We just weren't able to make enough plays at the end of regulation and overtime. This is a tough one, and we've got to be able to look at it and analyze a number of different things and then bounce back quickly. We have another game coming up here soon. But this is certainly a tough one here at home."
The first 14 minutes of the first half neither team had larger than a four-point lead until the Hurricane used a 17-7 run in the final six minutes to close out the first 20 minutes with a 39-30 halftime lead.
Tulsa built a 14-point second-half lead, 59-45, at the 13:36 mark before the Green Wave outscored the Hurricane 17-3 over the next four-plus minutes to tie the game at 62 with 8:42 left on the game clock. Tulane went up by two at 64-62 before Tulsa retook the lead and, other than four more ties, led for the remainder of the half. Tulane's Kevin Cross tied the game for a fifth time at 78-78 at the 0:09 mark, thus sending the game into overtime.
Tulane scored the first basket in overtime and held the lead for the entirety of the extra session, finishing with the seven-point win.
The Green Wave finished the game shooting 46 percent from the field to Tulsa's 41 percent and 36-to-33 percent from three-point range. Tulsa held the rebounding advantage 44-41, but the Green Wave had a 24-17 edge in free throws made, as Tulane made 24-of-29 and Tulsa 17-of-26 from the charity stripe.
