Tulsa Men Cruise to 107-78 Win Over UTSA

TULSA, Okla. –– PJ Haggerty's 25 points led five players in double digits as Tulsa (10-7, 1-4 AAC) cruised to a 29-point win, 107-78, over the UTSA Roadrunners (7-11, 1-4 AAC) Wednesday night in front of 3,518 fans at the Donald W. Reynolds Center.
 
Isaiah Barnes, Cobe Williams and Tyshawn Archie each had 17 points while Jared Garcia added 12. Haggerty had a team-high seven assists followed by Williams with six assists along with a team-high three steals.
 
Tulsa connected on 59-percent of its field goals, a season-high 55-percent from behind the arc and 83-percent from the charity stripe. UTSA entered the game averaging 10 treys a game and converting 35-percent from behind the arc but was held to just 6-of-31 for 19 percent tonight.
 
In addition to a season-high 16 three-pointers, the Hurricane dished out a season-best 24 assists and had a season-low seven turnovers. Tulsa's 107 points was the first 100+ scoring game for the Hurricane in 10 seasons as a member of American Athletic Conference.
 
"This was an absolute total team effort from everybody that appeared in the game, the guys on the bench, our students being back – wanted to say thank you to them. We had 700 of them here today who just started up class again – and our fans. This was a total team effort. I was really happy with the performance," said Tulsa Head Coach Eric Konkol.
 
"I told the guys, you can look at a stat sheet and kind of get an idea of what the game may have been like, but to see 24 assists and seven turnovers, that's just awesome. The guys really shared it well tonight and they were able to deliver and make the baskets."
 
Tulsa took only a five-point lead into halftime, 53-48, after leading by 12 points with less than five minutes in the period. The Hurricane opened the second half on a 16-2 run to take a 69-50 lead and ended the half outscoring the Roadrunners 54-30 for the 29-point victory.
 
The Hurricane took its first 20+ point lead on Haggerty's three-pointer at the 14:01 mark to make the score 74-52. UTSA got as close as 16 points, 76-60, at the 10:52 mark before the Hurricane then went on a 17-4 run for a 93-64 lead with 6:32 remaining in the contest.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
IN THE FIRST HALF . . .
UTSA opened up with a 5-0 lead but the Hurricane tied it at five on consecutive baskets, a dunk by Isaiah Barnes and a three-pointer by PJ Haggerty.
 
The Roadrunners went out to a 13-7 lead for its biggest lead of the half at the 15:06 mark.
 
The Hurricane responded with a 9-2 run for its first lead of the game at 16-15 with 13:17 on the game clock.
 
The lead changed hands six times over the next 2:16 … the score was tied at 27 with 8:50 remaining before Tulsa went on a 13-3 run to build a 40-30 lead with 5:23 remaining before intermission.
 
Tulsa's lead reached 12 points, 44-32, at the 4:31 mark.
 
UTSA responded with a 12-0 run to tie the score at 44 with 2:16 let on the first half clock … the Hurricane ended the half on a 9-4 run for a 53-48 lead heading into the locker room.
 
Tulsa was over 60% from the field (21-of-33) and three-point line (10-of-16). The Roadrunners shot 48.5% from the field and 31% from behind the arc.
 
 
IN THE SECOND HALF . . .
Tulsa opened the second half on a 16-2 run for a 69-50 lead at the 16:18 mark.
 
During the 16-2 run, Tulsa got six pints from Jared Garcia, four from Haggerty and three each Barnes from Carlous Williams

GAME NOTES
• Tulsa improved to 10-7 overall on the season overall and 1-4 in AAC games.
• Tulsa's win snapped a 4-game losing streak and 2-game losing streak at home.
• Tulsa improved to 7-0 in the UTSA series and scored 100 points in the series for the second straight contest.
• It was Tulsa's first 100-point game since March 4, 2021, against Northeastern State in a 107-74 win.
• This was just the fifth game in Tulsa's 10 years in the American Athletic Conference history to score over 90 points in a AAC game.
• Tulsa's 100+ points marked the first time in AAC history that Tulsa scored over 100 points.
• Tulsa is now 2-22 in its last 24 AAC games (including AAC tournament), winning its first league game since Jan. 21, 2023, at home against Tulane.
• Tulsa made a season-high 16 three-pointers, which is the third-most in school history behind 18 and 17.
• Tulsa's 53 first-half points is the most this season bettering the previous high of 46 points against Southwestern Oklahoma.
• Tulsa knocked down double-digit three-pointers for the seventh time this season
• Sophomore Isaiah Barnes had his 10th double-digit scoring game of the season with a career-high 17 points.
• Freshman Tyshawn Archie had his seventh double-figure scoring game of the year with 17 points.
• Freshman PJ Haggerty had his 16th double-figure scoring game of the season with 25 points.
• It was Haggerty's ninth game this season with 20+ points and 6th time in the last seven games, including third straight.
• Cobe Williams had his 13th double-digit scoring game of the season and the 66th of his career with17 points.
• Williams had his seventh straight game with multiple three-pointers made with two today.
• Jared Garcia scored 12 points for his sixth double-figure scoring game of the season.
