TULSA, Okla. –– The University of Tulsa men's basketball looks to get back in the win column when the Golden Hurricane hosts new conference foe UTSA on Wednesday evening in the Donald W. Reynolds Center.
Tipoff is set for 2:00 p.m. and will air on ESPN+ with Chad McKee, Pooh Williamson and sideline reporter Michelle Montaine bringing fans the action. Fans can also catch the game on Big Country 99.5 FM and the Varsity Network app. Bruce Howard and JR Rollo have the call.
Wednesday is the seventh all-time meeting between the schools, with Tulsa holding a 6-0 advantage in the series. TU and UTSA met briefly as conference opponents in the 2013-14 season, Tulsa's last season in Conference USA, and the first for UTSA. All meetings have been contested in Tulsa, with four coming in the Reynolds Center. The first matchup was in 1994, and the second came in November of 1998, one of the final four games played at the Convention Center before the Hurricane moved into the Donald W. Reynolds Center a month later.
The last time the Roadrunners and Golden Hurricane met was a high-scoring 100-96 Tulsa win on Nov. 28, 2017. Four Hurricane scored in double figures, led by 20 from Junior Etou. All 10 players who hit the floor for TU scored and had at least one rebound in the win.
Tulsa enters Wednesday's matchup on a four-game slide, dropping to 9-7 on the season, 0-4 in the American Athletic Conference after a 94-87 overtime loss to Tulane. It was just Tulsa's second home loss of the season.
PJ Haggerty picked up his sixth conference Freshman of the Week award after averaging 26.5 points, 5.0 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 1.5 steals in two games. He leads the team with an 18.9 scoring average, which is among the best in the country for freshmen.
Matt Reed, another freshman, had a big week. The Carrollton, Texas native scored 10 points and pulled down five rebounds at Charlotte, and then broke out for 13 points and 16 rebounds in Sunday's meeting with Tulane. In addition to collecting his first career double-double, Reed came within a rebound of equaling Michael Ruffin's Reynold's Center record of 17 rebounds against Air Force on Feb. 13, 1999. Reed's 16 rebounds were the most by a Tulsa player since Steven Idlet also pulled down 16 against Ohio on Dec. 6, 2009.
UTSA comes to Tulsa with a 7-10 record, 1-3 in conference play, and is in a two-game losing streak of its own. After picking up its first conference win against Rice, the Roadrunners went into Memphis and gave the No. 13 Tigers all they could handle before falling short in overtime, 107-101. Then, UTSA hosted Charlotte, falling 66-58.
The Roadrunners like to put the ball up from deep, leading the conference in both 3-point attempts (29.1) and makes (10.1) per game. Nationally, UTSA ranks 12th and 16th in those categories.
Jordan Ivy-Curry leads the Roadrunners in scoring, averaging 16.9 points per contest. He's one of four Roadrunners who average double figures in scoring, joined by Christian Tucker (12.8), Dre Fuller Jr. (10.6) and Carlton Linguard Jr. (10.2).
After Wednesday's game, the Hurricane will head back on the road. Tulsa will travel to Dallas, Texas to take on SMU for the final time in the regular season as The American opponents. Tipoff for the Saturday afternoon meeting is set for 2 p.m. on ESPN+.
