GREENVILLE, N.C. –– Turnovers and poor shooting in the second half proved costly for the Golden Hurricane as Tulsa fell 62-57 to East Carolina in Williams Arena at Minges Coliseum on Sunday afternoon.

With the loss, TU falls to 9-5 on the season and has dropped its opening two conference games. The Pirates improve to 8-7 and 1-1 in The American play.

The game was tied at 57 with less than a minute remaining, but for the second time in as many games, a well-defended 3-pointer proved the winner. This time, ECU's Brandon Johnson played Tulsa's villain, hitting a 3-pointer from the right corner over the outstretched hands of Carlous Williams to give the Pirates a 60-57 lead with 55 seconds to play.

After Tulsa failed to score on its ensuing possession, the Pirates sealed the win with a pair of free throws.

Cobe Williams scored 18 to lead the Golden Hurricane, knocking down six shots, five of which were from 3-point range. PJ Haggerty had another solid performance with 16 points alongside five assists. For the first time this season, Haggerty had zero free throw attempts. Isaiah Barnes finished the game with 12 points. Carlous Williams and Jared Garcia had six rebounds.

For the hosts, Johnson's 17 points and team rebounds were both team-highs. Felton and Ezra Auzar added 14 each. Kanas transfer Bobby Pettiford had six points, but was a creator for the Pirates, dishing out six assists in the contest.

A key in the game was holding onto the ball, as Tulsa committed 19 turnovers while only turning ECU over nine times. The Pirates also had 11 steals to Tulsa's four and outscored the Hurricane 20-9 in points off turnovers. The Pirates also outscored Tulsa 36-16 in the paint and 13-2 on second chance opportunities.

Tulsa shot 42 percent from the floor, but just 30 percent in the second half after hitting 57 percent in the opening half. The Hurricane finished the game 8-of-27 (29.6 percent) on 3-pointers. East Carolina shot 39.7 percent for the game and 50 percent in the second half.

HOW IT HAPPENED
IN THE FIRST HALF . . .
Tulsa scored the first points of the game off the tip as Isaiah Barnes benefited from a goaltending call on a layup. However, ECU would go on a 7-0 run as Tulsa turned it over five times in a three-minute span. A Haggerty jump shot ended the scoring drought for Tulsa, but immediately the Pirates got an and-1 and took a 10-4 out of the first media timeout at 15:44.

After battling through the early pressure from the Pirates, which saw their defense flying all over the court, the Hurricane returned fire with a 9-0 run of its own. Cobe Williams sandwiched a Barnes 3-pointer between two of his own to give Tulsa a 13-10 lead with six minutes off the clock.

The Hurricane seemed to have ever answer for the Pirates in the first half. Barnes extended the lead to six on a 3-point play at the 8:34 mark after getting fouled on a dunk. After the Pirates cut the lead to three, Cobe Williams connected on another triple to push the lead back to six.

Leading 25-21 with 5:18 left in the half, Haggerty made back-to-back buckets to push the lead to the game's largest at eight. He'd go on to score six straight for Tulsa as the Hurricane took a 32-29 lead to the locker room.

Haggerty had 12 points at the break, shooting 6-of-7 from the floor. Cobe Williams had 10 and Barnes added eight in the first half.

IN THE SECOND HALF . . .
ECU came out and scored the first five points of the second half, retaking the lead and setting the tone for a back and forth second half that had five lead changes and seven ties.

With the game tied 42-42 with just under 14 minutes to play, Cobe Williams gave Tulsa the lead with a 3-pointer. After an ECU dunk, the graduate guard knocked down a second triple to put Tulsa up four, which would be the largest lead for Tulsa the remainder of the way.

The Hurricane went the next seven minutes without a field goal, scoring only on a pair of free throws from Barnes and going 0-for-9 from the field during that stretch. To the credit of the Tulsa defense, the Pirates only scored nine points in that stretch and the Carlous Williams 3-pointer that broke the drought also tied the game at 53 with 6:48 to play.

The Pirates scored on consecutive possessions to go up four. Cobe Williams got a layup off a turnover and Isaiah Barnes followed up a missed shot to tie the game at 57 with 1:38 to go. The Hurricane had a couple of opportunities to get a stop, but couldn't secure the loose ball rebound, setting up the game-winning shot from the corner.
