Ramblers Pull Away from Golden Hurricane

11/24/2024 12:01:00 AM | Men's Basketball

CHICAGO, Ill. –– The University of Tulsa men's basketball team suffered an 89-53 loss at Loyola Chicago inside Gentile Arena on Saturday evening.

Tulsa falls to 3-3 on the season while the Ramblers stay undefeated at 6-0. It was a poor shooting night for the Hurricane, who connected on just 28.3 of its attempts on the evening and made just two 3-pointers at a nine percent clip. Even free throws were hard to come by, as TU shot 68 percent from the line (17-of-25)

Making his first Hurricane start, Dwon Odom was the lone TU player to score 10 points on Saturday. Braeden Carrington scored nine. On the glass, Ian Smikle pulled down 11 boards for his first double digit rebound game.

Loyola Chicago had five score in double figures, led by 19 from Des Watson and 15 Jayden Dawson. Kymany Houinsou only had six points but stuffed the box score with a team-high eight rebounds, seven assists and three steals.

HOW IT HAPPENED
IN THE FIRST HALF . . .
In his first career start, Ian Smikle scored the first points for Tulsa after cleaning up a TU missed shot and putting in the second chance layup.

Both teams struggled to connect in the first nine minutes of the game, with a Braeden Carrington triple made the game just 10-9 with 10:53 to play in the half. It was also only Tulsa's third made field goal of the contest.

A Tyshawn Archie layup put TU ahead 11-10, but the hosts quickly took the lead back and would not relinquish it the rest of the game. The Ramblers used a 12-2 run to turn a one-point lead into a 26-15 advantage with six minutes on the clock.

The Hurricane got the lead down to nine with 2:34 left in the half, but Loyola Chicago scored the final six points of the half to take a 42-27 lead to the lockers.

IN THE SECOND HALF . . .
The Ramblers opened the second half with an 11-2 run to extend its lead to 24, 53-29, with 14:35 remaining. Tulsa could not get any sort of rhythm on the offensive end as Loyola Chicago continued to build its lead.

The lead reached 30, 73-43, at the 7:44 mark, and the Hurricane was never able to cut further into the deficit. The Ramblers took a game-high 39-point lead with a little more than four minutes to go.

Tulsa shot just 27.6 percent from the floor in the second 20 minutes and missed all eight 3-point attempts. The Ramblers did not share those struggles, connecting on 63.3 percent of their shots and making 5-of-11 (45.5 percent) from deep.
