JACKSONVILLE, Fla. –– The Golden Hurricane pushed past the Detroit Mercy Titans 63-44 in Tuesday's Jacksonville Classic opener in The Reef at Florida State College at Jacksonville.
The win snapped a three-game skid for the University of Tulsa (4-3) ahead of Wednesday's finale against Georgia State. Detroit Mercy falls to 3-4 in its season.
Keaston Willis scored 15 to lead all scorers on Tuesday. Dwon Odom stuffed his box score with 11 points, a team-high eight rebounds and six assists. Isaiah Barnes also scored 12 with seven rebounds. Matt Reed was active on the glass with seven rebounds, and Ian Smikle added five boards.
After a lengthy first half scoring drought, the Golden Hurricane went on a stretch where TU made six three pointers on six attempts to overturn a six-point deficit and take a nine-point lead into the half. The lead quickly extended in the second half as Tulsa took control of the contest. The Hurricane did not have its best shooting afternoon, hitting 36.8 percent from the floor, but did knock down 11 3-pointers at a 32.4 percent clip.
On the other side, the Hurricane shut down Detroit Mercy's offense, holding the Titans to just 27.7 percent from the floor and 8.3 percent on 3-pointers, hitting just one of 12 attempts. Jared Lary was the lone Titan to score in double figures, putting up 12 points.
HOW IT HAPPENED
IN THE FIRST HALF . . .
Tyshawn Archie took no time getting TU on the board, knocking down a triple just 13 seconds into the game. However, it was the Titans who held an 8-5 lead at the first media timeout.
Dwon Odom's layup at 12:34 to get the score to 16-12 Detroit would be Tulsa's last point for 4:48 of game time. However, Detroit Mercy was only able to extend its lead to 18-12 in that same time frame.
Over the final 7:46, Tulsa flipped the score and took control of the game, outscoring the Titans 24-9 and connecting on six straight attempts from 3-point range. Odom and Archie got things started with back-to-back triples to get the deficit to 20-18. Isaiah Barnes tied the game at 23 with a 3-pointer, and then on the next possession buried his second of the half to put TU ahead 26-25, a lead the Hurricane would not relinquish.
Keaston Willis kept the run going with a pair of 3-pointers on back-to-back possessions and suddenly Tulsa was ahead 32-25 after four straight possessions with 3-pointers and six of its past eight. Matt Reed pushed the lead to nine with a second chance layup, battling through contact for the points, and then Odom's layup handed TU an 11-point lead.
The Titans scored the final point of the half to go into the break with TU ahead 36-27. Tulsa had balanced scoring in the first half with seven different Hurricane getting on the score sheet. Willis led the way with nine, Odom added seven and Arche and Barnes each had six.
IN THE SECOND HALF . . .
Second half starts have hurt Tulsa lately, but on Tuesday, the Hurricane did not allow the Titans to get back in the game. The Hurricane hit another three threes in the first seven minutes and outscored Detroit Mercy 14-6 to take a 50-33 lead at the 13:30 mark.
A Keaston Willis 3-pointer with 6:19 left gave Tulsa a 20-point lead, 59-39, for the first time. The final six minutes did not have a lot of scoring as Tulsa would score just four more points, and Detroit Mercy five. Jesaiah McWright raced ahead for a layup to give TU a game-high 22-point lead, and then Ian Smikle ended the scoring with a layup off a feed from Jaye Nash for the 63-44 final score.
