Tulsa Men Suffer 7-0 Loss at Baylor

WACO, Texas — The Tulsa men's tennis team entered the Hawkins Indoor Tennis Center looking to bounce back from a three-match losing skid, but the Baylor Bears were too much to handle as the Golden Hurricane would fall 7-0 in Waco Sunday. TU dropped to 3-4 on the year, while the Bears improved to 7-1.

With the absence of senior Thiago Pernas in Sunday's lineups, Tulsa made a shift from the usual doubles lineup, putting senior Pierce Rollins and freshman Alex Okonkwo at No. 1 Doubles, sophomore Timothy Carlsson Seger and freshman Victor Tosetto at No. 2 and senior Callum Gale and redshirt freshman Gus Tettamble in the third spot. The Bears were unphased by the switch as Baylor would take positions one and two by results of 6-4 and 6-3, respectively, to earn the initial score.

Baylor stormed out to a 3-0 lead in singles play by winning the second and fifth positions in quick straight sets. From there, it was a long battle to see whether the pendulum would swing in the Hurricane's favor. The momentum would unfortunately remain with the Bears as the team victory was clinched at 4-0 atop the lineup when Zsombor Velcz took down Rollins 6-1, 5-7, 7-5.

Electing to play on, Baylor would then win positions three, six, then four to end the day 7-0. TU players in the third and fourth positions took one-set leads to open their matches but dropped their next two frames, while the sixth spot ended in a long two-setter that concluded with a 9-7 tiebreaker win for the Bears' Louis Bowden.

Tulsa will come home to face Arkansas (5-2) next for a 5:00 p.m. showdown Wednesday, Feb. 21, at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center. The match will stream on Cracked Racquets.
