TULSA, Okla. –– The University of Tulsa men's basketball team makes its return to the Donald W. Reynolds Center as the Golden Hurricane welcomes Rice Saturday afternoon on Legends Day.
Tipoff is set for 2 p.m. and will air on ESPN+ with Josh Haley and Pooh Williamson bringing fans the action, and Michelle Montaine as the sideline reporter. TU fans can also catch the game on Big Country 99.5 FM and the Varsity Network app. Bruce Howard and JR Rollo have the call.
Saturday is Legends Day, as the Hurricane will honor and celebrate plenty of TU basketball alumni in attendance.
Tulsa (12-12, 3-9 The American) and Rice (9-15, 3-8 The American) met in late January as the Golden Hurricane fended off a furious comeback attempt to net a nervy 85-83 win on the road, the first in a little more than 700 days. TU has won 29 of the 35 games in the series, including each of the past 16. At home, Tulsa is 14-1 against the Owls and 13-1 in the Reynolds Center.
Both teams are seeking to end losing streaks, with Tulsa losing four straight and the Owls losers of two. However, the Owls have been road warriors in conference play, winning two in a row on the road and all three of its American Athletic Conference victories have come in opposing gyms.
The Hurricane will look to put an end to Rice's road winning streak and get back on path in league play. Freshman guard PJ Haggerty is the leading freshman scorer in the NCAA, averaging 19.8 per contest. In a midweek loss to South Florida, he scored 19 points, giving him 475 on the season and making him the leading freshman scorer in TU history, passing Tulsa Hall of Fame guard Shea Seals.
Travis Evee leads Rice in scoring this season, averaging 15.8 points per game, while Mekhi Mason puts up 14.1 points. The two swap positions in conference play, with Mason scoring a team-best 16.1 and Evee recording 15.0 points. Max Fiedler leads the Owls on the glass with 9.8 rebounds to go with 9.2 points. He also has a team-high 129 assists.
Following Saturday afternoon's game, the Golden Hurricane will prepare for a rematch with rival Wichita State. Tulsa will hit the road to face the Shockers in a Wednesday evening nationally televised contest. Tipoff is set for 8 p.m. on ESPNU.
