TULSA, Okla. — After a two-week break, the Tulsa men's tennis team swings back into action on Thursday, March 28, in a home doubleheader at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center against New Mexico State, with start times of 12 noon and 6 p.m. The Golden Hurricane will follow with a road match at American Athletic Conference Wichita State on Monday, April 1, at noon.
Â
This will be the fifth meeting between Tulsa and New Mexico State in a series that dates to the 2000 season. Tulsa owns the series 4-0 and is 2-0 at home against the Aggies.
Â
NMSU is currently 6-9 on the year. The Aggies are coming off a pair of 4-0 and 4-2 neutral wins over Morgan State and Omaha, respectively, before dropping a 4-3 decision at Abilene Christian.
Â
Tobias Wallin leads the Aggie singles lineup with a 6-7 overall record in the first and second positions. Aggie players are a combined 7-4 in the No. 2 position. In doubles play, Wallin and teammate Gustavo Campos lead the charge with a 6-3 mark atop the lineup. They will likely face their first ranked opponents this season in No. 30 Pierce Rollins and Timothy Carlsson Seger.
Â
This will be the 47th meeting in the longtime rivalry between Tulsa and Wichita State. The Shockers lead the series 25-21, but Tulsa has won 18 of the last 20 meetings, including the last four matches.
Â
The Shockers' eight-match losing skid has them at the bottom of the American Athletic Conference standings at 3-16 overall. Last time out, Wichita State took on Rice and UAB in the 65th Annual Ralph O'Connor Invitational. The Shockers fell 4-0 to the hosting 58th-ranked Owls before suffering a 4-3 heartbreaker to the Blazers.
Â
Misha Kvantaliani leads Wichita State this spring with a 6-10 record across the top three singles positions. In doubles action, two Shocker pairs lead with three wins. Kvantaliani and Richey King are 3-10 in the No. 1 position, while Jacome Alejandro and Marcelo Sepulveda are 3-2 in the third spot.
Â
Senior Thiago Pernas has recently found his rhythm in singles play, cruising to a 7-4 record fueled by victories in his last three completed matches. The Argentine holds Tulsa's best record in dual-match action and has held down the second and third positions.
Â
Senior Pierce Rollins and sophomore Timothy Carlsson Seger have found their chemistry this year to form Tulsa's premier doubles tandem. With a team-leading overall record of 11-5, including a 3-1 mark against nationally ranked doubles teams, the duo has risen 25 spots to No. 30 in the latest ITA poll, due in part to a 6-4 win over the nation's then-third-ranked doubles team from Illinois in their last outing.
