TULSA, Okla. — The 14-5 Tulsa women's tennis team is set to host UTSA for the Golden Hurricane's home finale on Saturday, March 29, at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center for a 10 a.m. start. TU will honor seniors Maria Berlanga Bandera, Lily Hutchings, Ana Naranjo Martinez and Mariana Manyoma Velasquez before the match.

Scouting the Roadrunners
  • This will be just the second all-time meeting between Tulsa and UTSA.
  • TU won the only matchup on Feb. 23, 1996, in a 6-1 decision.
  • The Roadrunners lead The American with 17 wins to only two losses. Those losses came from 4-2 setbacks against Tulane and Rice, UTSA's only top-75 ranked opponent of the season.
  • Saturday will be UTSA's first road match since Feb. 22 after hosting five straight in San Antonio.
  • Arina Babenko leads the Roadrunners with a perfect 15-0 singles record spanning the 3-5 positions. In doubles, Valeria Sanchez and Ekua Youri maintain the best record with an 8-3 mark, excelling with a 4-1 tally in the second position.
 
Doubles Dominance
  • As a group, Tulsa is enjoying one of its best doubles showings in recent memory.
  • Of the Hurricane's 19 dual matches this season, TU has earned the doubles point 15 times.
  • Tulsa's grabbed the doubles point in 13 of 14 team victories.
  • TU duos earned two major titles in the fall: the ITA Central Region Doubles Championship by seniors Maria Berlanga Bandera and Lily Hutchings and the AAC Doubles Championship by senior pair Ana Naranjo Martinez and Mariana Manyoma Velasquez.
  • Berlanga and Hutchings have clinched the doubles point five times for TU this spring with Naranjo and Velasquez matching with five doubles clinches as well.
  
Tulsa in the ITA Rankings
  • ITA Central Region-winning duo Maria Berlanga Bandera and Lily Hutchings stand as the 67th-ranked Division I duo according to the latest ITA Doubles Rankings.
  • The seniors are 16-6 overall together this year and 10-5 in dual matches. They ranked as high as No. 18 in the Feb. 5 ITA rankings.
  • Tulsa's second ranked duo comprises seniors Ana Naranjo Martinez and Mariana Manyoma Velasquez. Winners of the 2024 AAC doubles crown, they are 15-3 overall and 12-1 in dual matches.
  • Berlanga continues to climb the national singles poll, starting at No. 99 on Feb. 20, improving to No. 76 on March 4 and reaching a career-best rank of No. 65 in the latest singles rankings (March 18).
  • Tuesday, April 1, will be the next team, singles and doubles ranking release by the ITA.
 
Seniors on All-Time TU Career Win Lists
  • Maria Berlanga Bandera has 79 singles wins for 11th in TU history. She needs four more to pass Thalia Diaz-Barriga's (2005-09) 82 victories for 10th.
  • Berlanga also has 74 career doubles wins entering the weekend's action, tied for No. 12 in program history with teammate Lily Hutchings.
  • Ana Naranjo Martinez leads the current roster with 77 doubles victories, which ranks 10th in program history. She needs three more to pass Jana Sedivec (1998-02) and Martina Okalova's (2016-20) 79 wins for ninth all-time.
 
Last Time Out
  • Tulsa went 2-1 on the road last week, taking down TCU 4-3, routing North Texas 4-2 and falling 4-1 to Arizona in a neutral setting in Stillwater, Okla.
