TULSA, Okla. – Tulsa women's tennis battled with Tulane for nearly three hours Friday evening at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center, with momentum swinging back and forth before the Green Wave ultimately claimed a 4-2 decision.
Doubles court two was first to break through, as Tayla Wilmot and Coral Valle earned a 6-4 win to put Tulane on the board. Tulane answered just minutes later at the top spot, where Summer Chandler and Leigh Van Zyl grinded out a 6-4 victory in a match that featured game after game decided by two points.
With the doubles point hanging in the balance, all eyes shifted to court three. Natalia Fantini and Natalia Perez edged Lilitha Ndungane and Erin McKenzie, 6-4, in another match defined by tight service games and deuce battles, sealing the doubles point for Tulane and giving the visitors a 1-0 lead.
Every match across the six courts of singles either reached 5-5, required a tiebreak, or pushed to a third set. Tulsa struck first in singles at the No. 4 position. Ndungane delivered a composed 7-5, 6-3 win over Van Zyl, pulling the Hurricane even at 1-1 after surviving a tight opening set that hung in the balance late.
Court two finished next in one of the night's pivotal moments. Chandler took the opening set 6-2, but Carolina Alonso responded by forcing a second-set tiebreak. Chandler narrowly escaped 7-6 (7-4), restoring Tulane's advantage at 2-1.
The top spot swung momentum once again. After dropping the first set 6-0, Campbell Ricci flipped the match entirely, racing through the next two sets 6-1, 6-1 to extend the Green Wave lead to 3-1.
On court six, McKenzie rebounded from a lopsided second set to grind out a 6-3, 0-6, 6-4 victory, keeping the Hurricane within striking distance at 3-2.
That left the outcome resting on the final courts. At No. 5, Coral Valle captured the first set 7-5 before Micah Pierce stormed back, taking the final two sets 6-2, 6-1. Pierce's comeback clinched the team victory for Tulane at 4-2.
Court three remained unfinished in another back-and-forth contest. Alice Baba took the first set 7-5, dropped the second 3-6, and trailed 2-4 in the third when play was halted following the clinch.
The Golden Hurricane will return to the courts looking for a win on Sunday, when they host TCU at 11 a.m. in Michael D. Case Tennis Center
