TULSA, Okla. – Tulsa (6-9) battled past Arkansas State (5-5) in a 4-3 thriller Sunday afternoon at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center, earning its first win of the season that came down to the final match to clinch.
Doubles opened with momentum swings across the board. Arkansas State jumped out early in each court, taking the first set in all three matches before Tulsa steadied and evened every contest at 1-1. The Golden Hurricane ultimately secured the doubles point behind decisive 6-1 and 6-2 wins from Tayla Wilmot and Coral Valle at No. 2 and Erin McKenzie and Isabella Basson at No. 3, while the top court remained unfinished at 3-3.
Singles play delivered even more back-and-forth. The Red Wolves claimed the first two completed matches at Nos. 5 and 2 to take a 2-1 lead, but Tulsa answered. Carolina Alonso gritted out a 6-1, 4-6, 6-4 win at No. 3 before Maria Santos controlled her third set at No. 1, pulling away for a 6-4, 4-6, 6-1 victory to level the team score.
With the match tied and every remaining court headed to a third set, McKenzie authored one of the day's biggest moments, rallying from a 2-5 deficit in the opening set to steal it 7-5 before ultimately closing out a 7-5, 4-6, 6-4 win to seal the dual. The victory marked Tulsa's first match this season decided by the final court on.
The Golden Hurricane will return to the courts at Michael D. Case Tennis Center on Friday, Mar. 6 to host Kansas City at 3:00 p.m.
