LINCOLN, Neb. – The University of Tulsa volleyball team picked up its first win of the season as they beat the Grand Canyon Antelopes, 3-1 (25-23, 22-25, 25-23, 25-17), at the Bob Devaney Sports Center in Lincoln, Neb. Junior outside hitter Erica Bohannon led the way again offensively for the Golden Hurricane recording 16 kills, and junior libero Brooke Berryhill led the team in digs with 19. The Hurricane improves to a 1-2 record as the Lopes fall to a 0-3 record.
The first set was one of the closest of the match, as both teams were neck and neck the whole frame. There were no lead changes, but eight different times the score was tied. Tulsa was tied seven times with GCU within the first ten points, and then the Hurricane would separate from a 9-9 tie to make a run that put Tulsa up 19-11. That's when the Lopes would come storming back to tie the stanza at 23-23. With a huge kill from Bohannon and an attacking error by the Lopes the Hurricane would end the first set at 25-23.
In the second set the Lopes jumped out to an early 8-3 lead forcing Tulsa to call an early timeout. GCU would maintain the lead through the halfway point putting the score at 15-8, and that's when the Hurricane started to fight back closing the gap to a 19-18 Lopes lead. Tulsa would get the score as close as 22-20 with a Lopes lead before they ended the set 25-22.
Both teams came out of intermission with vigor exchanging points in the third set. This was the most back and forth stanza of all there were five lead changes, and twelve different times that score was tied in the frame. Five different times the score was tied within the first ten points, and that would extend to late in the match when the score was tied at 15-15 and 17-17. The score was tied again at 21-21, 22-22, and 23-23 before a strong kill from Bohannon and a block from Alualu to end third set 25-23.
The Hurricane came out slow in the fourth set down 9-4 before coming back to tie the Lopes at 10-10. That was the only tie of the match, and from that point Tulsa took an 18-13 lead making that the only lead change of the set. From that point on the Hurricane didn't look back, they ended the final frame 25-17 on a block from Trinity Alualu and Ashley Hooper.
Tulsa will look to improve on its 1-2 record this weekend, Sept. 4-5, when they travel to Tuscaloosa, Ala. to play in the Bama Bash.
