Tulsa Volleyball Secures Fourth Sweep of Season in Hard-Fought Win at Temple

PHILADELPHIA – The Tulsa volleyball team secured a hard-fought win at Temple on Friday night, en route to their fourth sweep of the season [29-27, 26-24, 27-25]. With the win, the Golden Hurricane (13-9, 6-3 The American) improve to 8-3 all-time against the Owls (10-10, 1-8), including three consecutive victories.
"I was really proud of the group to come from behind in each set," head coach Ryan Wills said. "Temple is a very hungry team and ready to play. "... Overall, we kept them under the goal that we wanted to put them at before the match."
Neither team led by more than one point, until Temple broke a 16-16 tie with a 3-0 run. Tulsa would later trail by as much as four points at 23-19. That would be the start of the Golden Hurricane storming back to capture the opening set, as they outscored the Owls, 6-1. They would take a one-point lead at 25-24 and never trailed from that point forward.
Maggie Hembree had her lone pair of kills during the run, while Dilara Gedikoglu and Mariah Pardo each tallied a kill. Tied at 27 apiece, Callie Cook gave TU a one-point advantage, while a Temple attacking error clinched the comeback for the Golden Hurricane.
Gedikoglu paced Tulsa offensively in the first game with a .600 attacking percentage. She had 10 kills on 15 attempts with just one error. Pardo had nine assists, and Roosa Rautio had eight.
The two teams played a tight game in the second set, as neither team led by more than three points. Tulsa would score four straight late in the set, regaining the advantage at 21-20. Hembree recorded two kills, while Hannah Overmyer connected on a pass from Pardo. The Golden Hurricane ended the set strong defensively. They tied the match at 24, as Maddie Rhoder and Cook combined for a block. Temple committed an error on the next play, and Gedikoglu found an opening to give Tulsa a 2-0 set advantage in the match.
The theme would remain the same in the final set. Down 19-15, Cook and Overmyer connected on two attempts, respectively, as Tulsa scored four straight for a 21-20 lead. Overmyer would later tack on her fifth kill of the set at 22-22. Gedikoglu ended the set with three kills and a service ace at match point to clinch Tulsa's fourth sweep of the season.
Pardo moved into the top five all-time at Tulsa in career assists, finishing with 18. The senior setter entered the match with 2,569 career assists, which was tied for fifth with TU alum Mendy Marsh. She claimed sole possession of the spot when she assisted on Kayley Cassaday's kill at 4-3 in the first set.
Gedikoglu paced the Golden Hurricane with 17 kills, to go with 11 digs for her ninth double-double of the season. Rautio had a team-high 23 assists, while Taylor Horsfall led TU with 14 digs.
Defensively, Tulsa combined for 10 blocks. Rhoder had one solo block and five block assists (3.5). Cook also had five block assists (2.5), while Hembree added four (2.0).
The Golden Hurricane continue their four-game road trip on Sunday, as they square off against UConn at 11 a.m.
