TULSA, Okla. –– Tulsa used a 21-5 run to start the second half en route to a 78-47 victory over the South Carolina State Bulldogs Wednesday afternoon at the Donald W. Reynolds Center.
Reggie Jones led four players in double digits with 18 points, including 12 in the second half, while Jeriah Horne and Martins Igbanu each added 12 points and Brandon Rachal had 11 points and 10 rebounds. The double-double for Rachal was his 3rd of the season. Elijah Joiner and Isaiah Hill each dished out 5 of Tulsa's 20 assists.
Tulsa improved to 5-1 on the season and Frank Haith earned his 100th victory as the Golden Hurricane head coach with the 31-point win. The last time Tulsa won by over 30 points came on Dec. 22, 2015 when the Hurricane handed Northern Arizona a 90-55 loss at the Reynolds Center.
Tulsa out-scored South Carolina State by a 46-20 margin in the second half, as the Hurricane shot 54-percent from the field and 43-percent from 3-point range in the final 30 minutes. The Hurricane knocked down 51-percent of its field goals and 46-percent of its three-pointers for the game, while holding a 28-16 advantage for points in the paint, 19-6 for points off turnovers and 29 to 14 for bench points.
"I felt like we played very well today. We shared the ball. We got production out of a lot of guys," said head coach Frank Haith. "I thought our defense got us going. We did an unbelievable job in the passing lanes and being in the gaps, and we got some easy buckets.
"It was good to see us make some shots. This team is very capable (of hitting shots). With that said, we still are a team that wants to play inside-out. We still scored 28 points in the paint, so there's no question it was good to see Martins get going a little bit," added Haith. "All in all, I thought it was a great win. We had a week."
Tulsa went on a 9-2 run to start the second half for a 41-29 lead within the first 3 minutes of the half. The Hurricane extended that run to 21-5 when Horne's 3-pointer put Tulsa ahead 53-32 with 12:18 left in the game. From the last minute of the first half when Lawson Korita connected on two 3-pointers, Tulsa had outscored the Bulldogs 27-5 over a 5:42 minute span.
Another Horne 3-pointer gave Tulsa its first 30-point lead, 69-39, at the 5:45 mark. The Hurricane took its largest lead with 4:14 on the game clock when Jones knocked down a trey for a 74-40 lead.
The first half was nip-n-tuck as the lead changed hands 4 times with Tulsa's largest lead at 5 points, while SC State's was 4 points. The Hurricane jumped out to a 7-2 lead, before the Bulldogs scored the next 8 points for a 10-7 lead at the 14:52 mark.
SC State had its largest lead at 13-9 with 10:37 left on the clock, before Tulsa grabbed a 2-point lead at 15-13. From that point, the game was tied 3 times before SC State took a one-point lead at 27-26.
Korita closed out the half with his two 3-pointers in the final minute to give Tulsa momentum with a 5-point margin going into the locker room.
At halftime, Jones, Igbanu, Horne and Korita each had 6 points to lead the Hurricane, while Tulsa has a 17-12 edge in rebounding and scored 14 points off the bench. Tulsa shot 48-percent in the first half, while SC State had a 44.0 shooting percentage from the field.
Tulsa will go on the road for a Saturday game at Vanderbilt that tips off at 7 p.m. and aired on the SEC Network. The Golden Hurricane returns to the Donald W. Reynolds Center on Wednesday, Dec. 4 to face Arkansas-Pine Bluff in a 7 p.m. tipoff.
