Golden Hurricane Tops SMU, 5-2, to Earn First Conference Victory

DALLAS, Texas. – The University of Tulsa women's tennis squad (13-8) claimed a 5-2 victory over SMU (7-11) to pick up the team's first American Athletic Conference win on Sunday.
In what played out to be a back-and-forth doubles point, Tulsa edged out the Mustangs at the No. 1 and No. 2 positions to take the early advantage. TU's No. 15 duo of Martina Okalova/Vera Ploner earned a 6-3 win at 1, while Marina Davtyan and Megan Hopton secured the point with a 6-4 victory at 3.
Senior Martha Matoula pulled Tulsa ahead by two with a straight-set, 6-0, 6-3, win at the No. 2 spot over SMU's Vivienne Kulicke. Matoula paces the Golden Hurricane in wins on the season, tallying a 14-2 record in the dual season.
The Mustangs responded with two singles wins of their own, defeating Ploner and Hopton in straight sets to even the match. Tulsa rallied off the final three matches to secure the win, starting with Davtyan's, 6-4, 6-1 win at the No. 6 slot.
Following Davtyan, Shura Poppe won a three-set battle over SMU's Ana Perez-Lopez, 0-6, 6-1, 6-4. In the final solo match, No. 98 Okalova topped No. 114 Liza Buss in the superset for her seventh victory of the season at the top spot for TU.
With the team's first conference win in hand, the team will return to Tulsa for its final home match of the season, hosting Temple on Senior Day on Saturday, April 6, at 10 a.m. CT.
