
Golden Hurricane Capture Seven Wins on Day One of Mizzou Invite

COLUMBIA, Mo. - The Tulsa women's tennis team opened their fall slate on Friday morning winning seven matches at the Mizzou Invite. The three-day invitational, hosted by Missouri, also features Houston and SMU and is being held at the Mizzou Tennis Complex.
In singles play, the Golden Hurricane captured five wins against SMU. No. 73 Martina Okalova got TU rolling with a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Sarai Monarrez Yesaki at No. 1 singles. Junior Shura Poppe picked up a 6-2, 6-4 win at No. 3 singles vs. Nicole Petchey. At No. 4 singles, Marina Davtyan defeated Tiffany Hollebeck 6-0, 6-1. Sophomore Megan Hopton ran away with a 6-0, 6-2 win at No. 7 singles vs. Emma Pieroni. Freshman Laia Conde Monfort was victorious her first collegiate match in the No. 6 slot. She defeated SMU's Katherine Jakeway 6-2, 6-4.
Lian Benedejcic forced a tiebreaker in the No. 5 slot. After falling to Jackie Nylander 6-4 in the opening set, the freshman came from behind for a 7-6 win in the second set. She would end up falling in a 12-10 tiebreaker.
Tulsa would then face Houston in doubles play. Okalova and Vera Ploner struggled to find their footing early on in their No. 1 doubles match vs. Ndindi Ndunda and Azul Pedemonti. But the fifth-ranked doubles team in the nation would prevail as they won the tiebreaker 7-6 (7-1). The Golden Hurricane also won at No. 2 doubles behind Poppe and Davtyan, as the duo defeated Elena Tairyan and Mimi Kendall-Woseley 6-4.
The Mizzou Invite resumes on Saturday, Sept. 21, as the Golden Hurricane start the day off with a pair of doubles matches. They are set to play SMU at 9:00 a.m., followed by Missouri at 10:00 a.m. Tulsa and Houston will then take to the court in a singles match at 3:30 p.m.
