A jumper by Tulane forward Krystal Freeman with no time on the clock gave the Green Wave a 64-62 overtime win over Tulsa on Wednesday night at Fogelman Arena in the Devlin Fieldhouse. The Golden Hurricane fell to 5-10 on the season and 0-2 in American Athletic Conference play, while the Green Wave moved to 7-8 overall and 1-1 in the league.
Kendrian Elliott finished with a team-best 18 points and nine rebounds, while Alexis Gaulden added 14 points, seven assists and four steals, Rebecca Lescay netted 10 points and Desiree Lewis posted seven rebounds and four steals.
Tulane evened the score, 49-49, at the 3:01 mark of the fourth quarter, and took the lead on a layup by Mia Heide with 1:57 to play. Elliott made it 51-51 just 15 seconds later, but a layup by Clark with just under a minute to play put the Green Wave up once again, 53-51. A free throw made by Irina Parau made it 54-51, but a three-pointer by Gaulden with just 13 seconds to play tied up the score 54-54 and forced overtime.
In overtime, there were three tied scores and four lead changes, but a jumper by Freeman with no time on the clock gave the Green Wave the 64-62 win.
"We were so disciplined in the first half and into the third quarter to take good shots, shots at the right time and right spot, and then in the fourth quarter we got away from that and as a result we shot 28-percent," Head Coach Matilda Mossman said. "Our guys have to figure out that there is a certain way we have to play and everyone has to buy in. Defensively we were dominating, we played our matchups well. I thought we played hard and competed, and we deserved to win that game. We had a six-point lead in the fourth quarter and let it get away from us because of the kinds of shots we took."
Tulane had a 41-36 lead in rebounds and a 9-2 advantage in blocks, but Tulsa owned an 18-14 edge in assists and a 16-8 lead in steals.
After shooting a solid 53-percent in the second quarter and 44-percent in the first half, Tulsa finished just 36-percent from the field in the contest, while the Green Wave shot 45-percent from the field.
Tulsa jumped out to an 8-2 lead over Tulane at the 4:41 mark of the first quarter and owned a 13-7 advantage at the end of the frame. Elliott had seven points, while Gaulden had six in the first 10 minutes. Both teams shot 37%, but Tulsa had double the attempts (16:8) and double the makes (6:3) compared to the Green Wave.
Tulane battled back to tie the score at 13-13 at the 8:13 mark of the second quarter, and took the lead on a layup by Arsula Clark just 17 seconds later. A jump shot by Morgan Brady, and layups by Elliott and Lewis put the Hurricane back on top, 19-15. Tulsa maintained their lead throughout the remainder of the first half and took a 29-21 advantage into halftime.
The Green Wave pulled to within four, 31-27, at the 6:56 mark, and then twice more before a three-pointer by Kayla Manuirirangi at the buzzer made it a three-point game, 42-39, with 10 minutes to play.
Tulane was led by Clark with 21 points and Free man with 20, while Sierra Cheatham had nine rebounds.
Tulsa will return to action on Sunday, January 12 against USF. Game time is set for 5:00 pm at the Donald W. Reynolds Center.
