After starting the game shooting 50-percent in the first quarter, Tulsa went cold and made just 18-percent of their attempts in the final three quarters to drop a 59-42 decision to ECU on Wednesday night at Minges Coliseum in Greenville, N.C. The Golden Hurricane fell to 7-19 on the season and 2-11 in American Athletic Conference play, while the Pirates moved to 7-18 overall and 4-8 in the league.
"We got up 12-3 and then they started pressuring us a little harder and we weren't comfortable with that so we turned the ball over and couldn't make shots," Head Coach Matilda Mossman said. "I felt like we played scared. ECU lost games earlier because they felt like they couldn't win and now I think they are a lot more confident. ECU is a good group of aggressive kids that play hard. We had so many live-ball turnovers, and it is hard to be effective when they take you out of your comfort zone."
Addison Richards had a team-best seven points, while Kendrian Elliott, Rebecca Lescay, Desiree Lewis and Kayla Moutry all added six points. Elliott pulled down a team-best seven rebounds, while Richards added five.
ECU entered the game ranked second in the country and first in The American with 13.8 steals per game and had 14 tonight, while the Golden Hurricane had just six. Both teams had 40 rebounds, while the Pirates had an 11-9 edge in assists and a 4-0 lead in blocks.
ECU shot 37.7-percent from the field, just 15.8-percent from three-point range and 50-percent (10-of-20) from the free throw line, while Tulsa shot 25.5-percent from the field, 25-percent from behind the arc and 65-percent (15-of-23) from the line.
Tulsa owned a 12-3 lead over ECU with 6:32 to play in the first quarter as the Golden Hurricane was 4-of-4 from the field and 2-of-2 from the free throw line, and the Pirates were 1-of-6 for 16-percent to start the contest.
TU had a 16-8 lead at the end of the frame, shooting a solid 50-percent in the first 10 minutes compared to ECU's 20-percent.
The Pirates battled back with a 16-0 run to start the second frame and took a 24-16 lead at the 3:46 mark. Kendrian Elliott ended TU's nearly 10-minute scoring drought on a pair of free throws made with 3:05 on the clock as TU's last made basket was a jumper by KK Rodriguez with 3:00 on the clock in the first quarter.
TU was held to just two points in the second quarter allowing ECU to outscore TU 20-2 in the frame and take a 28-18 lead into halftime. TU was 0-of-13 from the field in the second period, while ECU was 7-of-13 for 53-percent.
Destiny Johnson hit a free throw at the 8:11 mark of the third quarter, but the Hurricane didn't score again until Elliott recorded a layup with 5:18 on the clock in the frame. TU was 0-of-26 from the field ranging from the 3:00 mark of the first quarter to the 5:18 mark of the third frame, spanning 17:42 off the clock for TU without a field goal made.
ECU had a 13-11 scoring edge in the final frame for the 17-point win.
Lashonda Monk had a team-best 17 points for the Pirates, while Taniyah Thompson added 14 points, and Dominique Claytor had 12 points and 11 rebounds.
