Tulsa Track and Field Heads to Alabama for The American Indoor Track and Field Championships This Weekend

TULSA, Okla. - The University of Tulsa track and field team is set to open competition at the 2020 American Indoor Track and Field Championships this weekend. The two-day meet begins on Friday, and will take place inside the Birmingham CrossPlex in Birmingham, Alabama. Head Coach Steve Gulley is bringing a total of 33 competitors (18 men, 15 women) to the conference's indoor meet.
The men's team features Scott Beattie, a two-time All-American Athletic honoree at the 2019 conference indoor meet. The redshirt sophomore finished second in the 3,000 (8:16.97) and 5,000-meter (14:25.46) runs. Isaac Akers, Jerik Embleton and Henry Visser were also awarded All-Conference accolades, as they raced to a third-place finish in the distance medley relay at 10:04.70.
The women's team showcases last year's third-place distance medley relay bunch of Jaidah McCallon, Jaidyn McCallon and Adrena Mazzei. Their time of 11:37.56 is the third-best time during indoor competition at TU.
As a team, the Golden Hurricane will be on full display in the 3,000m on Saturday afternoon, as 10 men and nine women are listed to compete in their respected races.
Patrick Dever, Peter Lynch, Malte Propp, Jackson Schwartz, Akers and Beattie all rank between third and 10th in The American standings in the event. Lynch ranks third at 8:08.12, followed by Dever in fourth (8:09.96), Beattie in fifth (8:14.56), Akers ranking sixth (8:20.19) and Schwartz in seventh (8:21.15). Propp has the 10th-best time at 8:25.74.
On the women's side, four Hurricane stand in the top 13 overall. Katharina Pesendorfer has the seventh-best time at 9:45.87, followed by Caroline Miller in eighth, who holds a time of 9:46.02. Ashley Barnes rounds out the top 10 with her best time of the season standing at 9:50.33. Caitlin Klopfer stands at 9:51.15 for 13th overall.
Carsyn Spurgeon is the lone Hurricane competing in a field event this weekend. She will look to be an All-Conference selection in the long jump, beginning at 2 p.m. CT on Friday. The redshirt junior enters the meet ranking third in The American this season and holding the school record in the event with a mark of 6.08m (19' 11.5").
Both days of competition are scheduled to kick off at 9 a.m. CT., with the multi-events. The first running event of the two-day meet is the women's mile run trials, starting at 12:25 p.m. CT on Friday. The men's mile trials follows the women's event at approximately 12:30 p.m. On Saturday, the women and men's mile run finals are slated to open track events with 11:20 and 11:30 a.m. starts, respectively.
