Rautio Shines in Season Opener Against Shockers

TULSA, Okla. – Roosa Rautio records the first double-double of the season for the Hurricane; however, TU (0-1, 0-1) falls in its season opener 3-0 to the Wichita State Shockers (5-0, 1-0) in the Reynolds Center Thursday afternoon.
Rautio, the Hurricane starting setter, led the team with 22 assists and tied for the team-high of 11 digs with libero Maddie Flora. Hannah Overmyer was the third Hurricane player to record double-digit digs with 10 in the match.
Tulsa was led in kills by Kayley Cassaday who had 12 kills on 24 attempts and only one error for a .458 attack percentage.
The Hurricane's defense received contributions at the net from Callie Cook and Lauren Isenberg as each recorded 3 blocks in the contest.
Tulsa started the first set strong, taking a 5-4 lead on kills from upperclassmen Maggie Hembree and Cook. The Hurricane and Shockers exchanged blows in the first set with Tulsa trailing 20-19 before Wichita State ended the frame on a 5-0 run.
After dropping the first set, the Hurricane found itself in a 9-4 hole to start the second. However, Cook and freshman Avery Kalsu sparked a 3-0 run to pull TU with two.
The Hurricane did not quit, using a 5-0 run led by Overmyer serving tied the contest at 14 all. The Shockers surged back, ending the second set on an 11-5 run to take a 2-0 match advantage.
Tulsa fought till the end using back-to-back kills by Cassaday to trail 24-23 in the third, but an attack error ended the match giving Wichita State a 3-0 victory.
The Shockers were led by Nicole Anderson who put in 13 kills and 9 digs. Setter Kayce Litzau recorded a double-double for Wichita State with 18 assists and 11 digs.
The Hurricane is back in action tomorrow at 1:00 p.m. in the Reynolds Center to close out the series with the Shockers on ESPN+.
