Tulsa Men’s Tennis Falls at SMU 4-3

DALLAS, Texas –– The Tulsa Golden Hurricane men's tennis team dropped a road match Sunday afternoon to the SMU Mustangs by a score of 4-3 at the SMU Tennis Complex. Tulsa's record fell to 11-9 and SMU improved to 15-13 on the season.

SMU jumped out to a 1-0 lead with the doubles victory and went up 2-0 when Liam Krail captured a straight set 6-2, 6-3 win over Tulsa's Ezequiel Santalla at the No. 3 position.

The remaining five singles matches went to three sets.

Callum Gale put Tulsa on the board with a 6-2, 4-6, 6-2 win at the No. 6 spot, giving him his second career singles win in as many chances. Tulsa's No. 1 Kody Pearson tied the score at 2-2 when he came back from a first set 6-3 loss to take the final two sets by scores of 6-4 and 6-1.

The Mustangs retook the lead at 3-2 as the No. 2 match ended with a 6-4, 1-6, 6-4 SMU win over Connor Di Marco.

Stefan Hampe evened the match for the Hurricane, 3-3, at the No. 4 spot. He won the first set at 6-3, dropped the second 6-3 and pulled out the third set 7-6 by winning the tiebreaker 7-5.

The final point came down to the No. 5 position, where Tulsa's Juan Pablo Cenoz lost the first set 6-3, won the second 6-4 thus forcing the third set. In the third, Cenoz trailed 5-1 before tying it at 5-5 and forcing the tiebreaker. SMU's Clarke Wilson took the tiebreaker 7-5 for the 7-6 win to clinch the Mustangs victory.

Tulsa plays No. 39-ranked USF on April 18 and two days later faced the No. 9-ranked UCF Knights (April 20). The American Athletic Conference Championship takes place April 23-25 Orlando, Fla.
