The Hurricane brings a 9-4 record into the contest, 0-1 in The American. Tulsa opened conference play with a heartbreaking loss to the No. 15 Memphis Tigers 78-75 in the Donald W. Reynolds Center. After fighting back to tie the game with under a minute to play, the Tigers escaped with a win thanks to a 3-pointer with four seconds left. Tulsa's attempt to tie at the buzzer rimmed out.
PJ Haggerty scored 27 points and pulled down eight rebounds to lead the Hurricane. He also dished out four assists and recorded a trio of steals. Carlous Williams set a new high with 16 points, including four triples. Cobe Williams had 10 points, most of which came in the waning moments of the game.
Haggerty leads the team with 17.9 points per game, which continues to rank him second in the nation for freshman scoring. He's within five points of breaking into Tulsa's top-10 for freshman scorers,
Cobe Williams is second on the team with 11.8 points per game this season. He and Haggerty are among some of the nation's best in steals per game, averaging 2.31 and 2.38 per game, respectively. Haggerty ranks second on the conference and 23rd nationally, while Williams is third in The American and 25th in the NCAA.
East Carolina holds its home opener on a two-game slide, touting a 7-7 record, 0-1 in The American. The Pirates opened The American against new conference foe and nationally ranked FAU. Despite falling 79-64, the Pirates battled the Owls tight until a late 14-1 run put the game away.
ECU is led by preseason AAC second-team selection RJ Felton, who averages 16.5 points per game. He is one of three Pirates to average double figure scoring, and all three are returners this season. Brandon Johnson (14.7 points) is second and is also the team's leading rebounder at 9.3 per game. He has six double-doubles this season, including three in the past four games. Ezra Ausar adds 13.2 for the third and final double-digit scorer.
Following Sunday's game, Tulsa will finish its North Carolina trip with a game against Charlotte on Wednesday evening. Tipoff against the 49ers is set for 6 p.m. (CT) and will air on ESPN+.
