CHICAGO, Ill. –– The Golden Hurricane will look to get back in the win column with a road contest at Loyola Chicago on Saturday evening inside Gentile Arena.
Tipoff is set for 5 p.m. and will air on ESPN+ alongside the Marquee Sports Network with Justin Bernfield and Stephond Robinson on the call. Fans can also catch the contest on Big Country 99.5 FM and the Varsity Network app. Andy Masur and JR Rollo will call the action. Masur is filling in for the Voice of the Golden Hurricane, Bruce Howard, who is on the road with the football team at South Florida. The Hurricane kicks off against the Bulls at 2:30 and the radio broadcast will switch to hoops once the football game is completed.
Tulsa brings a 3-2 record into Saturday's matchup. The Golden Hurricane started the season 3-0 before a triple overtime loss at Missouri State and a 71-57 loss to Little Rock in the past week. Loyola Chicago is undefeated at 5-0 and have won 23 of its past 29 games dating back to last season's battle in the Donald W. Reynolds Center, a contest Tulsa won 88-77.
The Hurricane and Ramblers are tied at two wins apiece in the series. It's the third series in a row where Tulsa and its opponent are either tied in the all-time series going into the game or was tied following the final buzzer. Loyola Chicago won the first two meetings in 1948 and 1965, but Tulsa has won the two modern matchups, both under head coach Eric Konkol. The Hurricane dominated 85-66 in Myrtle Beach in 2022 and then won again 88-77 in the Reynolds Center last season. It was Keaston Willis' final game of the season before his injury, and he led the team with 15 points. Tyshawn Archie added 12 and Isaiah Barnes scored 14.
Five Hurricane continue to average double figures in scoring through the first five games of the season. Willis leads the way, averaging 14.4 with Archie close behind putting up 14.2 points. Dwon Odom (13.6), Barnes (12.8) and Braeden Carrington (11.8) are the others to reach the mark.
Carrington leads the way on the glass, pulling down 6.8 rebounds a game, while Barnes and Willis each record 4.8 per contest. Archie and Odom have combined for 37 assists this season to go alongside 19 steals.
Odom has been a spark for the Golden Hurricane off the bench. He is the team's third leading scorer (13.6 points) while shooting 58.7 percent from the floor, which leads Tulsa. His 18 assists are second on the team behind Archie and he leads the way with 12 steals and five blocks. He ranks 45th nationally and third in the conference in steals, and his 2.40 steals per game ranks 71st in the NCAA and fourth in The American.
The Ramblers come in off a narrow 76-72 win over Southern Utah on Wednesday, remaining undefeated while handing the Thunderbirds their first loss of the season. It was the 11th straight win for the Ramblers in Gentile Arena, spanning this season and last.
Jayden Dawson and Sheldon Edwards, Jr. lead the way in scoring for Loyola Chicago, averaging 14.6 and 10.8 points, respectively. They are the lone two scorers to average double figures, but anyone is a threat as evidenced by the team-leading 12 points from Des Watson, 11 from Kymany Houinsou and Jalen DeLoach's 10 in Wednesday's win. Francis Nwaokorie and Miles Rubin have done the most work on the glass, pulling down 5.6 rebounds a game, each.
Following Saturday's contest, the Golden Hurricane will stay on the road. Tulsa will fly to Jacksonville, Florida for the Jacksonville Classic on the campus of Florida State College. TU will take on Detroit Mercy on Tuesday before finishing the event with Georgia State on Wednesday afternoon. Tipoffs for the classic 11 a.m. (CT) against Detroit Mercy and 1:30 p.m. in the finale. The event will air on BallerTV.
