MANHATTAN, Kan. — Tulsa narrowly fell to Kansas St. 84-83 in a closely contested match up at Bramlage Coliseum on Monday. It was the second one-point game in a row for the Golden Hurricane, and their first such defeat since the 2021-22 season. It was the first time Tulsa played in back-to-back one-point games since January of 2011, falling to SMU before beating UTEP three nights later.
Miles Barnstable led the Golden Hurricane with 18 points, hitting four 3-pointers and collecting nine rebounds. Tylen Riley contributed 12 points on 5-of-7 shooting and added four assists. Myles Rigsby made an impact at the free-throw line, converting all eight attempts and finishing with 12 points, playing in his season debut.
The game began with a balanced exchange of scores as the Golden Hurricane (3-1) matched the Wildcats' (4-0) early points. Tulsa found a brief lead when Ade Popoola connected on a 3-pointer at 13:32, part of a sequence where they capitalized on the Wildcats' turnovers. Tulsa maintained pressure with critical plays in the paint, like Tyler Behrend's layup at 11:21, keeping the score tight throughout the half. Despite Tulsa's efforts, Kansas St. edged ahead by halftime, leading 39–34.
Tulsa surged early in the second half, highlighted by Barnstable's three-pointer at 18:55, which tied the game. A series of successful free throws by Popoola and a layup by David Green kept the momentum with Tulsa, giving them a narrow edge. Kansas St. responded with a series of baskets to regain the lead, but the Golden Hurricane countered with a 6-0 run, featuring a Barnstable layup and Rigsby's free throws, to pull ahead 55-51 midway through the half.
Despite Kansas St.'s efforts to close the gap, Tulsa maintained their advantage with timely scoring, including a crucial three-pointer by Barnstable at 2:04. Tulsa led 79-76 with just over a minute remaining. However, Kansas St. rallied late, capitalizing on turnovers to edge ahead in the final seconds. Tulsa had a chance to win it at the buzzer, but Green's turnaround jumper came up just short in the closing seconds.
The Golden Hurricane return to the Reynolds Center to host Austin Peay on Friday with a 7 p.m. tip-off.
