HOUSTON, Texas – Tulsa trailed wire-to-wire in a 71-50 loss to the Rice Owls on Saturday afternoon in Tudor Fieldhouse.
Tulsa (11-17, 5-10 The American) allowed Rice (13-15, 4-11 The American) to score the first seven points of the game and never recovered. Rice led by double digits inside of seven minutes and only briefly relinquished a double-digit advantage on two occasions.
This was the first time TU had lost at Rice since 2005, snapping a seven-game winning streak in Houston. It was also Rice's first time to get a season sweep against Tulsa since that 2005 campaign.
The Hurricane shot just 37 percent for the game and 30.4 on 3-pointers, making 7-of-23 efforts from long range. Seeking a second half comeback, the Hurricane connected on only 32.1 percent of its efforts and made 2-of-9 (22.2 percent) of its 3-pointers as the game slipped away.
Rice was 44.8 percent on field goals and also made seven 3-pointers while shooting 33.3 percent from that range.
Keaston Willis and Tyshawn Archie were the lone Hurricane to score in double figures with 14 and 13. All of Willis' points came in the first half. Dwon Odom added nine second half points in a relatively quiet game for the graduate guard, recording just one rebound and an assist, tied for his lowest assist output with Oklahoma State (12/4) and at Loyola Chicago (11/23). Jared Garcia pulled down 11 rebounds with his six points.
Trae Broadnax led the Owls with 16 points. Kellen Amos scored 13 and Jimmy Oladokun added 11.

The lead grew to 11 with a 3-pointer before Archie drove in and hit a tough jumper over a defender for Tulsa's second field goal with 13:59 remaining. The Owls quickly scored to get the lead back to double digits. Tulsa's sporadic scoring continued to hurt the Hurricane in the opening half as the next TU field goal didn't come until a Willis layup with 10:19 remaining as Rice's lead blossomed to 21-7.
Willis remained engaged in the Tulsa offense for the half, recording a traditional 3-point play and then knocking down a pair of triples as part of his 14 first half points. However, Tulsa could not find a way to slow down the Owls as the Rice lead grew to 16, 37-21, at the final media timeout of the half with 3:46 left.
Rest of the half remained close to even with Tulsa slightly outscoring the Owls 7-6. Willis made his third 3-pointer of the half and Garcia scored twice down the stretch. The Owls carried a 43-28 lead into the lockers.
The Hurricane recovered from a slow start to shoot 42.3 percent (11-of-26) from the field and 35.7 percent from 3-point range, knocking down five triples. However, the Owls scored far too easily, hitting on 58.6 percent (17-of-29) of its shots and making six 3-pointers at a 46.2 percent clip.

After Odom's triple, Tulsa missed seven straight shots until Archie converted a contested layup to end a nearly four-minute scoring drought to get Tulsa within 47-35 with 13 to play. This started a 6-1 run from Archie brought the deficit back under 10, 48-39, with 10:44 remaining, but Tulsa could not get any closer.
The Owls scored five straight to push the lead back to 14. A 3-pointer with four minutes remaining expanded the lead to 18, 65-47. Rice outscored TU 6-3 the rest of the way as the Golden Hurricane fell 71-50.
