#15 Memphis Pulls Away in Second Half of Win Over Tulsa

2/5/2025 10:10:00 PM | Men's Basketball

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The Golden Hurricane men's basketball team allowed the 15th-ranked Memphis Tigers to distance themselves in the second half of an 83-71 loss in front of 10,237 fans in FedExForum on Wednesday evening.

Tulsa (9-14, 3-7 The American) trailed the Tigers (19-4, 9-1 The American) 63-54 with 9:53 following a Tyshawn Archie 3-pointer. Memphis went on to outscore TU 14-4 over the next 4:19 to push the advantage to 19, 77-58 and take control the contest.

Turnovers were an issue on Wednesday as Tulsa turned it over 16 times, a high in conference play, leading to 25 Memphis points, while the Hurricane only turned Memphis over eight times, leading to 13 points.

Archie paced Tulsa with 17 points, scoring in double figures for the first time since Charlotte (1/12). He added three rebounds, three assists and a season-high four steals. Tulsa also got 11 each from Dwon Odom, Isaiah Barnes and Jared Garcia. Odom led the team with six assists, and freshman Ian Smikle pulled down seven rebounds.

Former Hurricane PJ Haggerty scored 23 to lead all scorers, making 3-of-5 (60 percent) from 3-point range. Dain Dainja scored 21 to go with six rebounds.

Both teams shot the ball above 50 percent for the floor, Memphis holding a slight advantage 56.7 to 53.6 percent. The teams were also close to even from 3-point range, with Tulsa knocking down eight at a 41.2 percent clip, while Memphis connected on nine while shooting 42.9 percent from downtown.

HOW IT HAPPENED
IN THE FIRST HALF…
It took 2:13 for the first points of the game, which came on a tip-in layup for the Tigers off a missed shot. Tulsa kept the game tight but didn't take its first lead of the half until Dwon Odom knocked down a jumper in the lane off a Memphis turnover to put TU ahead 13-12 with 13:31 left in the half.

Memphis retook the lead on the ensuing possession and held the advantage for the next 9 minutes of game time, but the Hurricane refused to let the Tigers jump ahead further than six points. Trailing 27-21, Tulsa went on a 7-0 run to reclaim the lead. Tyshawn Archie made back-to-back layups, the latter on a steal and assist from Odom. Jared Garcia capped the run with his second 3-pointer of the night to give TU the 28-27 lead with 4:31 on the clock.

Tied at 29, PJ Carter fueled an 8-0 Memphis run with back-to-back 3-pointers. After trading baskets, Keaston Willis connected on a 3-pointer in the near corner as time expired in the first half to send Tulsa to the lockers down 39-34.

Garcia led the Hurricane with nine points in the first half with a pair of 3-pointers and three rebounds. Tulsa outshot Memphis 53.6 to 51.6 percent, but 10 turnovers turned into 13 points for the Tigers, while TU scored just four off three Memphis mistakes.

IN THE SECOND HALF …
Memphis extended its lead to nine, 52-43 at the 14:04 mark on back-to-back 3-pointers. Haggerty connected and then the inbounds pass was stolen, leading to a Tyrese Hunter 3-pointer in the corner and a Tulsa timeout.

Out of the timeout, Memphis turned it into a 9-0 run with another steal and triple from Hunter. The run ended on the next Memphis possession as Archie jumped a pass and found Odom sprinting down the court for a two-handed jam to cut the Memphis lead to 55-45 with 12:30 remaining.

The Tigers started to pull away at with just under 10 minutes remaining and a 63-54 lead. Haggerty extended the lead to 12 with a 3-pointer. Archie answered with one of his own, but then Haggerty found the range again, followed by another 3-pointer from Colby Rogers to push the lead to 15. Odom responded with a 3-pointer, but Memphis scored six straight to grab a 75-57 lead with 6:39 left.

From there, Tulsa would outscore Memphis 14-6, but it was not enough to overturn the deficit as the Tigers outlasted Tulsa 83-71.
